Yeah. Screw that. I have 4 kids (17,14,10, and 5) and we were crammed in a 2300 sq ft home with no basement. That home is a rental now. We bought a 4 bedroom 3 1/2 bath 2900 sq ft home on an unfinished basement 3 years ago. I finished the basement of 1200 sq ft and added 2 bedrooms, a full bath, living room, and home office. I left one 150 sq ft room unfinished for storage.

Everyone has their own bedroom and we have an extra guest room upstairs. We will downsize in 12 years after my youngest graduates HS. But it won't be 500 sq ft. More like a 3 bedroom 2200 sq ft ranch style home within 20 miles of the ocean around Naples, Fl..

I'm surprised colleges haven't jumped on the trend and started building them and renting them out at premium prices.

5th wheels are shite in the quality department and are generic as frick. I'd rather build something of my own.

If you want to live in a tiny house, go ahead. I don't want to have to crawl up and down stairs like that to get in and out of bed, and have my ceiling only about 2 feet above me.

Fine. Even for $30k you can get a whole lot more travel trailer than you can one of these tiny houses.

Now go ahead and Downvote it. But when you do at least be honest. You know for the money a travel trailer is a shite ton more cost effective. But the tiny house fad is just too cool for you to pass up because at the end of the day, doing what's "cool" trumps everything else nowadays.

Might be going to a tiny house convention next week in Colorado Springs.

No kids go for it. With kids seems ridiculous, especially teenagers. Although may make them the Nikola Tesla of masturbation.

That cabin pic as built is 100k in cost. You've got 30k in stone

For under 30k I can use materials and finishes that will last a decades all while designing the space exactly how I want. I'll post pics of the build we're about to do on a 30' gooseneck once it gets into full swing. The design has a structural element that hasn't been done before that will effectively almost double the living space once parked, granted it's not something you'd want to move on a weekly basis. Some will love it, some will hate it, but it will be unique. To each their own.

I don't understand why people come in here to try to prove a point about how tiny houses aren't for them. Some guy up there saying he's got 4 kids ranging from 17 to 5. No fricking shite a tiny house isn't for him, it's not meant to be.

Personally I love tiny houses. Granted everything I own can be place into my vehicle and moved in 1 load (did it 4 months ago, doing it again next month). I'm a minimalist person and a tiny house would be perfect for me, but I'm not really committed to one right now.

I have to laugh when they have tiny houses on a show like house hunters. On an episode the other day the people shot down one house because the toilet was too close to the kitchen and shot down another because there wasn't room to entertain. No shite there's no room to entertain... the place is only 300 square feet.

Same here. My wife and I love to travel and aren't really enthusiastic about being stationary in one place to "settle down" when there is so much variety in the U.S.. I'd rather have something that is paid off and low maintenance, save our money, and not accumulate a house full of shite you have to buy just to fill up empty space. We'll inherit a nice 300 acre chunk of land and a home, so we'll have the option to retire early and homestead after we spend our youthful years traveling and being active.

Those who live in them shouldn't throw rocks. Isn't that the old adage?

I think tiny houses can work for a single person or a couple....without kids.

I laugh at any of those tiny house specials on HGTV with kids. They had one where the couple had 4 kids looking for a tiny house. One of the kids was a 14-15 year old girl and she just looked miserable at the idea of living in a tiny house with her family. She'll be the teenager that moves out right after they graduate HS.

I call them tiny liberal weenies.

And bet most expand their tiny weenie homes by another 500 sq ft or more and spend as much as if they bought a 3000 sq ft home at least.

Small minds=small homes and BIG money... But that environment though

That's a very ironic statement. I'm as far from a "liberal" as one could get, build most everything I have, fix my own vehicles, etc.. I just don't see the point in building more house than I need. To me, it's just a waste of my time and resources.

I think they're pretty neat and might make sense for some people but I don't think I'd be interested in one

I do think that some of the construction concepts and techniques they use could be good for ideas for smaller but reasonable sized homes around 1000 sqft.

It's never the amount of space, the stuff in the space and how it's utilized is much more important. But not even close to as important as the location..... location location location.

You can give me a 10K square foot house 2 hours out in the sticks but i'd rather live in the 800sq foot efficiency in a proper urban center.

Agreed.

I would much rather live in a smaller, older house in Scottsdale than in a brand new, huge house out in Glendale.

I could totally vacation in one of those tiny houses though in some gorgeous setting(ex: on a cliff overlooking the pacific ocean or something like that).
