Germans would capitulate when surrounded.
Japanese would kamikaze.

In addition, (assuming similar conditions existed in Europe as did in Japan when the decision was made to use atomics... i.e. before D-Day) a nuke probably would not have made it to a major German city without established air superiority and a ground presence to protect inland air fields.

Logistically and tactically, Japan was a better target for this type of strategy.

The Anti-Japanese propaganda and completely different cultures certainly didn't hurt either.

There was a significant cultural clash - no question about it. And the Axis powers - not so much Italy, but Japan and Germany pursued novel and extreme theories about race and racial superiority -to the point that Hitler classified the Japanese as the "Aryans" (or "Master Race") of Asia to justify allying with a group that was quite the genetic shift from his own ideas about what constituted the "Master Race."

ETA: And while we're on the subject, is there any question the Allies were far more diverse and liberal than the Axis? I mean, we fielded an American army - in the classic sense. We had folks from every corner of the world, genetically, had soldiers that spoke every language of the conflict, of every shade, creed, color, pigment, etc. We weren't perfect, but we were a damned sight better than the racists we were fighting - not even fair to compare because of how good we were, relatively speaking.

Germany had mostly already surrendered anyway, fighting was already greatly diminished on the Western Front while the Germans focused on resisting the Russians. I don't think it would have happened.

In Japan OTOH it was thought there would be truly massive casualties required for a successful invasion. Personally I think the estimates were too high by far but that was what was being planned for.

racial opinions

Highly unlikely this would have played a role. Keep in mind that many of those making the decisions spent some time prewar with their Japanese counterparts in various diplomatic initiatives, they knew each other as individuals rather than as caricatures.

Not sure how you mean this, so will address both possibilities:

If you mean it was clear in the summer of 1945 that Japan was ultimately going to be defeated, then you are correct.

If you mean the war was going to be over in the summer of 1945 (without nukes), then no way.

Yeah, not sure what he's talking about. The timetable for Operation Downfall didn't even call for the second phase (Coronet) to start until the Spring of 1946.

This is how I meant it. As in, it was clear that we were going to win the war against Japan, though obviously it would have take another year or so more to finish it without nuclear weapons.

I know it's hard to tell. What you've got to do is look for graffiti. If you see any, it's Detriot. If not, it's a bombed out German city from WWII.

You don't appear to know much about anything, to be honest.
