Or you could get a job and let someone else get their hands dirty.

Most people who know how to change oil don't change their own oil. Its not hard and if anyone needs to do it all they have to do is google it, but yeah I don't think changing oil is a MUST learn.

I was amazed in Navy bootcamp how many guys could not swim. I realize not all jobs in the Navy are aboard ship, but if you are going in the Navy, you better know at least how to tread water before they throw you in the deep end of the pool.

I've been taught how to change my oil. And like you said, I can Google it. But I've never done it and probably never will.

Like someone else said, you will never run into a time where you are on the side of the road.. desperately needing to change your oil.

If anything what is more important to do as an adult is to have the agency to get your oil changed when it is needed. Keep track of it. While on the topic of staying on top of things, CHANGE YOUR AIR FILTERS AT HOME.

Oh.. and every adult should know how to/take the personal responsibility to pick up things as they mess them up. Clean the kitchen immediately after dinner. Pick up behind you every time you make a mess. Nothing is worse than looking at a few hours of cleanup because you've been a lazy dickhead.

.. I could really go at this game all night

My cousin destroyed her first car for this simple reason. She never got the oil changed, for some reason never thought about it. This was back in the early 90s so not like cars now (that can go longer between oil changes).

And keep tabs on your windshield wipers because there are some oil change places that will try to push both air filters & windshield wipers on you.

Do some of y'all have poor reading comprehension or something?

Just because you'll NEVER have to do something doesn't mean that you shouldn't know how to maintain your vehicle.

There is not a single thing I can't fix on a car. I've built them from the ground up, but I pay for oil changes as well. That is about the only auto work one can have done without getting ripped off.

They do the windshield shite to me all the time. "It will only be [some crazy amount] extra".

No. My dad has them stockpiled in the shop. Change my oil and shut up.

Windshield wipers are something out here that you have to replace pretty often. Not cause it's used a lot...but the extreme heat ruins them(cracks them).

I saw this in a thread a while back about changing your own oil..

Plus, you have to get underneath the car which is kind of peasant work

I would think knowing how to check the oil level and where to place more oil at if low are more important than learning how to actually change the oil.

Interview well
Change a tire
Manage finances (including investments)

I know how to change my oil but that is a worthless skill in terms of "fundamentals"....

You would think that most adults would at least keep their entire house at least reasonably clean. It's not hard to maintain, but when I was in high school there was this kid who lived in my neighborhood. We were friends, but the first time I went in his house I was shocked. His mom & dad was sitting in the living room watching TV, they had clothes all over the living room, the kitchen was a wreck. I was going through the hall to the guy's room and there was shite stacked up in the hallway. When I got to his room, it smelled like old socks. I would have been completely embarrassed to have friends over, but it blew my mind that the house was as dirty as it was & his parents didn't give a shite, he didn't give a shite. I remember leaving his house & going home right away to wash my hands & face.

I knew people like this too. Weird.. WEIRD people.

I've known a lot of people that just get lazy though. My brother and I moved in together, and his place before was decent enough, so I figured he'd be clean. PFFFFT. Sure, if you walked in, everything looks great. But he will do shite like leave my brand new knife outside for 3 days because he grilled on the patio and was using it (????), burn food into skillets/pans to an absurd level, leave dishes with food stuck to them in the sink, leave empty boxes in the pantry... just the same stupid shite he did as a kid because Mom would clean after him.

He puts so much laundry in the washer/dryer (after I told him not to) that he broke one of the plastic siding things inside of the dryer off because the load was too heavy

Interview well

Good one! My poor best friend was struggling for over a year because every interview she did was a flop. I think she is just shy/intimidated because she never had to work in college.

Along with that.. take off the rose-colored glasses and look around. I've definitely had some red flags at interviews/during hiring process that I should have acknowledged (like other employees telling me to run for my life)
