I don't know the ins and outs, but we have won some major cases on technicalities and merits (lack thereof) before we even hit trial. It has worked out well.

the good ones:
making sure insurance covers your meds if you have insurance and if you don't have insurance, making sure you don't get fricked by a $1000 prescription that should be $4
making sure the store is stocked and not making you run across town to get your albuterol for your kid
double checking to make sure addicts or dealers don't get tons of controlled substances
double checking your meds to make sure there's no interactions (happens often)
the bad ones:
just going to work and giving 0 fricks and filling bottles

Depends on who you work for. I work at an independent pharmacy that does compound hormone replacement therapy, topical pain therapy, etc in addition to regular retail prescriptions. Most of my day is spent verifying prescriptions, sitting on the phone with doctors offices about drug interactions, medication therapy management, answering patient questions and counseling patients.
I worked for a large chain pharmacy for a little over 12 years and hated my life just like most chain pharmacists do. I couldn't be happier now. Some pharmacists specialize into different areas of medicine as well.

I work with alot of pharmacists who have never worked in a pharmacy, but have corner offices in corporate high rise with patents all over the walls. They mosty work from home. The office is just a trophy room.

Same here, but she has a fair amount of stress.
I think the thing that most don't realize is that they deal with insurance and stupid people that don't understand their own insurance most of the time.
She has to deal with belligerent customers constantly who think everything should be free, and there should be no waiting

Me too and I have kidded her for years saying a machine could do her job. But she has about 5 more years before we retire so none of you bastards do a thing about that for the next 5 years please. I need her income for my retirement.
To be honest, my wife is a Nutritional Pharmacist for a big hospital. She formulates all the patients needs who are on supplemental feeding. Its not a regular pharmacy job.
Hospital pharmacist do more with the drugs than retail pharmacist and retail does more with insurance.

All things AI/Robots should be able to manage soon and perform more reliably than a human. I still don't think people realize just how many professional jobs the computers are coming for.

Try not to have to use their professional insurance.

This is a good question.
It seems like they are paid to be held responsible if someone is given the wrong type of medicine or something.
Someone brings a prescription to the pharmacy, the pharmacy puts the amount of whatever drug the prescription calls for in a bottle then sells it to the patient. Sometimes they have to call the insurance companies to ask them questions. And yes they have to know about the drugs so they are able to tell patients information they need to know, but its not like they can prescribe meds to patients themselves.
The doctors tell them what the person needs. In today's world, there could be some type of online reference that pharmacist can log into that has all the current information about the drug that they are filling. I never really understood the job of a pharmacist.

PDR, Physicians Desk Reference. Has existed in hard copy for 71 years, now called "Prescribers Digital Reference" online . Was one of the first documents to be available on the Web by subscription 30 years ago.

Give you medicine you ask for.
Basically pharmacists make $120,000 a year doing a job that requires little more skills than McDonalds. And McDonalds actually involves much more work/standing on your feet than being a pharmacist does. Heck if nobody's either in line or calling you a pharmacist gets to do nothing.
I can not think of a single profession that is more overpaid than pharmacists.

They count. They have to be able to count so you get the correct number of pills. They're pretty advanced. sometimes prescriptions need fifty pills, and the pharmacists get that right, most of the time.

from what i understand, they're pretty knowledgeable about illnesses as well as pharmaceuticals.

Count pills and make sure you don't OD on your own prescriptions by accident.
