Given this day and age, what exactly do pharmacists do? I know they aren't in the back with a mortar and pestle whipping up some drugs that the doctor wrote a Rx for. Every time I see them, they are strictly counting and separating the pills on a blue plastic lid with a spatula.

pay some idiots to tell you it's going to be 4 fricking hours before they can manage to put your pills in a bottle and hand it to you.

I agree that today's pharmacists seems like a waste of time and money a large majority of the time. Wish they would just give you the stuff at your doctor's office already. Pharmacist seems like one of the easiest high-paying "normal" jobs I can think of.

At the very least, they have to have a working knowledge of the drugs being dispensed so that they can work as a check and balance of what's being distributed and if it could interact with other meds distributed to the same patient by other doctors.

You also still have compound medications that are prepared specifically for a patient.

Drug interactions, drug interactions, calling to switch one drug that's not covered to another drug with a lower cost, reporting that you have a prior authorization on a script, stopping you and your kids from getting too many controls, refusing to sell syringes to your kids... Mostly babysitting the public to make sure you're taking your meds the correct way. Oh and flu shots

I'm sure I forgot plenty of other things but I just off work and people have already pissed me off enough and it's only night one

That is the doctors job though b/c pharmacists don't screen you when you get the drugs as to side effects nor can they change the drugs themselves, only the volumes.

this is definitely true. clinical pharmacists do a lot of monitoring of patient drug levels and manage doses accordingly. I always consult pharmacy for vanc levels and dosing

Mostly this if talking about a retail pharmacist. I left that game a long time ago and went to law school.

Mostly confirm that scripts aren't stupid, seem relatively indicated and within relative guidelines at about the right dose, and call the doctor when things don't add up/script seems wrong.

They also keep, sort, order, etc stocks of medication and dispense it as written.

Then there are some that do compounding, so they can mix up compounds that aren't usually available to sell (different topical medications, mixing/diluting powders into solutions, etc).

Some others work in hospitals and do relatively the same-recommend dosing based on a bit more information available. They'll also recommend different meds based on what's available or based on empiric/specific therapies for certain bugs, and they're available to tell the doc sort of where the drugs actually go in your body for certain kinds of infections. They'll also give recommendations on dose changes based on how sick the patient is.
Some places will also let them change doses under protocol based on things, too.

I'm sure a pharmacist could clarify some things, but that is a cursory view of how useful they are. They help me and cut out a lot of headache pretty frequently.

This.

Other than an "enforcer" of the law (keeping people from filling their ADHD medicine 15 days before the due date, or keeping an eye on how much Pseudoephedrine one is buying), it is mainly counting pills and putting on a label. She'll also give the occasional flu, Shingles, Tetanus type shots.

At least she admits it.

Apparently hire singers to explain side effects.
