The area around Salzburg has to be some of the most beautiful in the world. There is a reason Hitler had a summer retreat in the Alps at Birchesgarten. .

One hour-ish by car from Nuremberg, two hours from Munich. Win and Win

The Czech republic is not far away.

If you've never lived in Germany, you'll think you died and went to heaven.

tl/dr: WOULD

Garmisch may still have the Passion Play.
Close - Oberammergau.

But he'll almost certainly miss it.

Well my duty station was Fulda. We just went to Graf for gunnery. As for not seeing the sights, you'd have to take that up with my CO.

How were you the only serviceman in Europe with no time off. You must have only been there a week or two eh?

Konniggsee outside of Berchtesgaden is the most beautiful place that I have ever seen.

No, I got time off, just not while there. We were only there a couple weeks. When we went down to Graf we were there for gunnery so basically my whole time there consisted of time in the motor pool and in the field.

Every town I've been to in Bavaria (Munich, Wurzburg, Regensburg, Nuremburg, Passau) was awesome. Do it I say!

Unless your other options are Vicenza, Italy or some other decent OCONUS duty station you'd be a fool not to take it. You will never have the ability to travel and experience European culture again (unless you find civilian work there later) like if you were stationed there.

As long as you don't hang out on post and complain about how there's nothing to do you should have a blast over there. Good luck, Toujours Pret!

Nice. I was stationed in Darmstadt. You live in Lincoln Village?

To the OP, I've only been to Graf for the field, but it's beautiful country. And you're correct, gotta get those European assignments where you can these days.

To all the bros, thanks for the input.

My other option is Fort Polk, so I am leaning towards Graf.

All I know is it's not that far from Munich which is quite enjoyable late September to early October every year. Beautiful scenery near the Alps, the food is way better than one might think, the people are mostly very nice but you will have more of a need to know the language than in other parts of Europe. I would jump on it!

Only advantage to Polk is the proximity to LSU. But maybe it's time to let those glory days go, and settle down with a nice German woman. Agree or nah?

Scotlandville and Port Allen are even closer to BR but you aren't contemplating moving there are you?

You will be thrilled at the talent level in Germany.

Oktoberfest in Munich?

Winter in the Alps?

Worst case is you put off serious wife-shopping for your stay in Germany.
