What Does the OT Know About Grafenwohr, Germany, or Bavaria in General?

Just got an offer to select Grafenwohr, Germany as my next assignment.

This means I'll probably be in Germany for three years, although not necessarily at Graf the entire time.

2.5 hours from Prague (Czech women ate the best, I hear).

What does the OT know about being stationed at Graf, or just Bavaria in general?

I think the consensus is that it's a lot more remote than Stuttgart and the like, but it's still Germany.

With our presence shrinking in Europe, these opportunities are harder to come by, so I'll probably end up taking it. But I know I can't without first seeking advice and consent of the OT.

Went to Garmisch twice while my dad was stationed in Darmstadt, you are never lacking for something to do in that area, King Ludwig castles and palaces, volksmarches, Munich, etc., I would go back in a heartbeat.

Spent 3 weeks there back in '98. It was great. It was August and the daytime highs were in the low 60s. It's where I learned what good beer tastes like. Kind of rural, but there are many cool small villages around. Neurenburg isn't too far. I'd go.

I have never known a military man who didn't love being stationed in Germany

You can drive across Germany in 6 hours. You can take the train everywhere to travel and good public transit even in most small towns.

A days travel all over Europe and the train system over there is fantastic. Access to London, Paris, Prague, Amsterdam, the beaches of Spain, Rome, etc..

Awesome place. Don't think twice about taking it. Beautiful country and tons of things to do outdoors like, hiking, skiing, cycling and camping. Munich is nearby and it's a great hub for rail and plane service. Ryan air is super cheap and you can jump around Europe for next to nothing. Salzburg is within an hour or two of Munich and it's a great small city to visit. Munich has great beer tents set up all over. The Kirschegarten is one of the best. The German people can be a bit cold at first but will warm up to you if you engage them and treat them with respect. The Black Forrest has some great villages to explore and Garmisch may still have the Passion Play.

Never call someone there a "Grammar Nazi". Germans appreciate good sentence structure and expect the same of others.

I love the whole region. Absolutely go. Trains from Munich are a breeze. Innsbruck and even Venice are easy rides. High speed trains from Munich to Salzburg. Ludwigs castles are cool. Prague is awesome. Cesky Krumlov is cool too. In short, this is an easy decision. Go.

I was stationed in Fulda in the late 80's and did tank gunnery at Grafenwohr. Can't tell you much other than the tank ranges are (or were) pretty awesome.

If you didn't see more than a tank range while stationed there, then shame on you. My father was career Army and we constantly traveling.

You are right. You may not get another chance to live in Germany. You should take it and go.

Even if they send you to Fort Polk right after your 24 months in Germany, it will be worth it.
