The wife's dad stepped out a side door of the science building at MC when it was under construction (1960s?). A two foot piece of angle iron fell off the roof and struck him directly in the front of his hard hat. It bounced away, ripping a three-inch gap in the hat.

Knocked him out but protected his head. It would have gone right through his forehead had he not been wearing his hardhat. He kept it in his workshop for years as a reminder.

I’ve worn my fair share of them on construction sites and still do from time to time. I had one on today at a data center build.

After my grandads funeral I asked my grandmother for my grandads hard hat that he wore when I worked on rigs with him. She said sure but let me wash it first. I told her no way thats mud and memories from when I worked with him.

For one, this.

For the other, psychological. Supposedly because everyone is wearing one, your brain tells itself “Oh yea, I need to be safe.” As you slice your fingers off with the powersaw.

Is this real? Where is the leg on the bottom left guy? Did a drone take the shot? Why would 5 guy's be up there at the same time? So many questions..

That's very sentimental, but that hard hat is probably expired. Most sites I've been in don't really enforce it, but a hard hat has an expiration date located under the bill.

Nothing overhead yet still forced to wear them.

Unfortunately you can thank the morons who get hurt elsewhere on sites like that. Then HR comes in and says you can’t pick and choose who wears the hard hats and ultimately the EHS guy says fine everyone wears them. Nobody is comfortable, but everyone is compliant and safer.

I had a wrench fall from overhead one day when I was on a site doing a walk. Popped me square in the head and left a nice mark on my hard hat, but I didn’t feel a thing. I never questioned them again.

The only time I have to wear one is when I visit a quarry or mine. And that usually only lasts for about an hour or two. 99% of the time my hard hat sits under the back seat of my pickup truck along with my yellow safety vest.

This. Every plant is different, but the plant I'm at now I have to wear a hard hat if I'm just going from point A to B for a meeting. Not even going into a unit. Yet if you're going to the gate to go home you don't have to wear one. Makes no sense. Yet I've been in plants that if you're on the street and not going into a unit you can have no PPE on at all.

I have been to the top of our stack. It is taller. We wore HHs up there too.

I've worked in plants for 17 years. I hate heights. I've been fortunate to not have to climb towers and such. I'm a planner/scheduler. I worked at the coker in Exxon for about 5 years. The drums are 141 foot tall. The bottom of the drum is on the 40 foot and the top is on the 141. I've spent plenty of time on both decks. But thankfully I never had to go to the top of the derricks, which is 100 foot above the 141. Barrell ladder climbing. No thanks. If we ever had crane work at the top of the derricks, we had to get permission from the BR airport. You can see the derricks of the cokers from the MRB.
