Off-topic a little but I've wondered if you would feel any correlation to the following:

As an LSU fan, I realize there are many 'bad' apples in our fan base. Criticism from our rivals can be anything from the 'Walmart T-shirt fans that never went to school' or the 'Loud and obnoxious drunks that care way too much about football'. I tend to get defensive because nearly all of the LSU fans I know (i.e. my close friends and family) are respectable and good people, while the criticism is often filled with wide generalizations and hate.

Is being black in the US somewhat like the above but multiplied by 1000? There are so many good black people in our country that are just trying to work hard and raise families (i.e. similar to your upbringing). Yet the criticism often seems like it's toward an entire race and not articulated in a positive manner.
