Can't believe I'm getting down votes for this. These libtards need to take a long hard look at their party. Top ten poorest cities in our country are run by democrats. And have been run by democrats for years. It's not a coincidence

And the poorest States are run by Republicans

There needs to be trains or trolleys that take you directly into the city and out.
Everything right of the bywater needs to move further right

Dropping standardized testing, so teachers could teach to the students' abilities, smaller classrooms. Many students can't keep up because teachers have to move at lightning speed to cover all topics on these tests, they give up, think they are worthless, have no chance, and detach themselves from society.
If we used some of the money being dumped into education, without a true purpose, to have seriously skilled psychologists in each child's life from pre-k onward, it can make a difference.
I have pre-k teacher friends that say kids show up at 4 years old not knowing how to speak any words!!! If we wait for the poo poo heads to get it together on their own, it'll never happen. We need to give the kids a fighting chance to break the cycle by helping them to be normal humans.
We have a place where all children are forced to go from the age of 5-16, we, decent humans need to take advantage of this.

Honest answer:
- stop mass incarceration; lesser sentences for drug crimes. Young black men get "in the system" at a young age for petty crimes. Are not rehabilitated in prison, it does the opposite. Are released yet now know other life style than crime. Are imprisoned for a majority of their life.
This leads to
- many black children being raised in fatherless homes
This would help rectify that factor
At this point the family unit of black people can be stabilized. May take generations.
Then....
- education. Pump money that WAS going to prisons into the schools where it belongs. Having a more educated general population helps EVERYONE it helps the entire nation, not just one race or one portion of people. End affirmative action that sends minoroties into institutions where they feel out of place and out performed academically. This has been proven to actually hurt minoroties. Pump insane amounts of cash into schools, early education, after school programs.
Once educated and with a stable family life the black community will see the value and potential every individual life has. Not something that is disposable.
They will fear ending up in prison rather than seeing it as a rite of passage. This will deter violent crimes by itself but also will garner respect for fellow human being.
- jobs. Couple education and higher respect for life and family with high paying fulfilling jobs and people will generate their own income and take pride in themselves.
Presto.
Not hard to figure out.

The best chance New Orleans had would have been Vitter being elected Governor.
All of the previous Republican governors disliked New Orleans, but Vitter having been born and raised there could have entertained several of those possibilities or directions.
BS. Vitter couldn't give two shits.

The success of a city these days mostly has to do with location and demographics. The mayor of a city can only do so much.

Cutting the govt handouts and forcing capable people to go to work for starters.

The real answer is gentrification.
"Fixing" New Orleans is an oxymoron. If you fixed it, then it wouldn't be New Orleans.
Hipsters are moving there because it's New Orleans. Tourist go to visit because it's New Orleans. Those people don't want it to change.
People who live there and complain about it need to move, or get used to it. New Orleans can't be changed and shouldn't be changed.
What reasonable people call a shithole of crime, dirt, corruption, and seediness, others call home.

Such a bs answer. When you commit a mass number of crimes you will go to prison at higher rates. No innocents being mass incarcerated. What a joke

Education and reducing non violent drug charges to misdemeanors are the two most important parts IMO. everything else that can possibly be done can be put in place but without improvements to education, the system will remain broken.

Nothing... Time to embrace everything wrong with the city.

Who knows. New Orleans, for a city its size, is truly at a whole different level crime wise. Its become the norm and the citizens tend to just shrug their shoulders and chalk it up as "another day in the Big Easy".

You're exactly right but the uninformed yokels that constitute this board won't admit it.

Sleaziness/corruption =\= rampant violent crime. There's nothing attractive about car jackings, armed robbery, rapes, murders, and home invasions.
