What are with the obscure Google doodle tributes?

It seems like every day they are honoring some unknown obscure person who fought the "white devil." Today it is Yuri Kochiyama, go ahead and google her because, like me, I doubt you've heard of her.
Is this because of all the backlash they received over not doing a dumbass doodle for memorial day? Are they now being smartasses?
