The Boys in the Boat, about the rowers from Univ of Washington competing for a shot at the 1936 Olympics. And Dead Wake, about the sinking of the Lusitania. I highly recommend both. Particularly if you are interested in the events leading up to WWI.

You probably already went this route but Tom Clancy. His Jack Ryan series is good. You want to read them in either chronological order or the order they were published, so you avoid spoilers, but the two best are Cardinal of the Kremlin and Executive Orders.

I had heard of the book, but it was like a mythical thing. Then one day, I was in Books-a-Million, and there it was. Bought it immediately, have read it several times.

Yes, we both have checkered pasts.

You like ww2 history?

I recommend 1942 or 1943, great reads about the years the US was gearing up for war. Also "Rommel's war" is excellent, let me check my shelf.

If you like Hampton Sides, you'll enjoy his book Blood and Thunder about Kit Carson and settling the west.
I just finished his book Hellhound On His Trail. It's about James Earl Ray stalking MLK and the FBI manhunt to track him down. It's interesting and an easy read. (Although it's a very small part of the book, Sides doesn't present Jesse Jackson in a very flattering light. Gave me even more reason to dislike that bastard!)

Norman Mailer's Harlot's Ghost - A Novel of the CIA is one of my all time favorites. Mailer was pretty hit or miss for sixty years or so but his best stuff was damn strong.

John LeCarre's Smiley books are good, and I really liked The Little Drummer Girl as well.

Herman Wouk is solid, either the WWII books or the ones about the birth of modern Israel.
