What are police trained to do if a person says they have a gun?

Are the police trained to say "tell me where it is and I'll retrieve it" or is it ever okay to allow the person hand the gun over to you?

They shouldnt do anything. If its just a traffic stop for speeding the cop should just say "thank you for informing me." That should be the end of it.

In the past I have asked to step out of my vehicle leaving the gun behind. Officer was fine with it.

Kept my hands on the wheel and told the cop where it was at. One cop had me step out with my hands visible, the other didn't care.

A smart cop is going to relieve you of your weapon before he hands you the ticket and you see how much it costs.

During Hurricane Andrew, my stepmother gave me her gun to go sleep at our lafayette office so that nothing would get stolen. On the way back to the New Iberia office the following day, i was pulled over by a State Trooper for speeding. Over the intercom, he asked me to step out of my vehicle. I immediately stepped out of the vehicle with hands raised and walked over to the trunk of my car, spread my legs and placed my hands on the trunk of my car. He didnt ask me to do it but i did it anyway since i had my stepmother's loaded .357 on the passenger floorboard. As the Trooper approached, i told him about my stepmother's loaded gun, why i had it and where i was coming from. He said, follow me Mr. LKSDJFL. So i walked behind him to passenger side door, he opened it, grabbed gun, took bullets out, checked gun out, put it on seat and we walked back to the back of the vehicle. He said thank you for telling me about the gun. I said no problem officer, you cant be too careful nowadays. We shook hands, he gave me my ticket and i was on my way. With a loaded gun in the car, i was not taking any chances. I straight up put them hands on the trunk and spread them legs real quick. I honestly think it is great practice to have a driver step out of the vehicle and to the back of the car rather than the Leo approaching the vehicle imo. Worked out good for me with no issues.

I am almost certain the police will be cleared in this case in Baton Rouge, because the dude did in fact have a gun. Bottom line, the suspect is dead, so there is really only one side of the story to tell. Cops say he was reaching for his gun so he shot him and that's that.

I feel that the cops could have probably handled the situation better and we could have avoided a whole bunch of this mess though.

I obviously dont know all of the facts, nor do I know exactly how the situation unfolded so I may be off base, but here is what I think should have happened.

1. police gets a call about a guy in the parking lot who is selling Cds who has pulled a gun out on somebody.

2. Police arrive and see subject matching the description of the person who just pulled a gun on someone.

3. Police should have been on very high alert upon arrival. They should have gotten out of their vehicle guns drawn and kept distance in this type of situation.

3A- Suspect complies to officers with guns drawn and situation is handled.

3B- suspect most likely runs, instead of fights with officers, since he has the space to get away in his mind. Likely tries to ditch the gun while running. Ends much more peacefully.

3C- suspect reaches to pull out weapon and gets blasted by cops who already have guns drawn.

Now who knows. Maybe they did 3A and the guy complied until they got into close quarters and then the fight took place. I'm not saying the cop was wrong in shooting him, but maybe there were steps that could have prevented this whole thing. A lot of lives were lost because of this entire mess, for something that should have been so preventable.

Pretty simple - if you get pulled over the cop will ask you for your license and proof of insurance. When you hand him you DL give him your CC permit at the same time. That way he knows you're armed without ever having to say "I have a gun". Keep wallet cellphone and keys on dash with your hands on 10 and 2 and the cop will know you aren't a threat. Also ASK before making movements especially if the officer knows you are armed.

When I've run into this situation, I've had about half retrieve it themselves, and the other half had me set it somewhere visible, but like on the other side of the dash, etc. where it's not easily reachable from sitting in the driver's seat.

One of the reasons I don't legally keep a weapon in my vehicle. Never have to worry about that situation.

Shoot that person on the spot. Ask questions later.

A sad thing here is that nobody wants to recognize what these two cops are going through... This is gonna haunt them and they will never be able to patrol BR again....

I always let them know and the usual response from them is "you don't touch yours and I won't touch mine"

If they want the gun, they're going to retrieve it off your person. They'll put you in a position of disadvantage and take it.

I always have a gun in my truck.

9/10 times I've been pulled over they seem unaffected when I tell them I'm armed.

One time I was on the way to camp and had somewhere around 8 guns on the back seat. I told the cop and his response was "don't worry I have more than that on my back seat"

Seriously not trying to flame but if the person stopped starts making movements the police feels threatened by. What is that cop supposed to do in that split second?
