I don't think anyone is jealous of a profession that includes 40 hours of overtime a week. Enjoy Jody.

....or you could become a dentist and make $120K on about 16 hours/week.

Most plants are three years. I do know that BASF has a unique top out structure....they reach top out in 6 months.

If you don't enjoy doing that type of work and won't be good at it, don't do it. It sucks coming behind shitty operators that are there just to collect a paycheck.

The young ones like to say they're clearing $130k while simultaneously bragging about doing a rural development loan. Many of them are not very smart and many don't make nearly what they say they make.

The ones that do are either 30 years into it or working every second of overtime they can.

At CF in Dville it's 4 years to become a Class 4 operator, but you're constantly being evaluated. If your sup can tell you know what you're doing you can test out early and get top pay

Top pay ranges depending on what company you work for but average top pay is $35-$40 an hour with your major industrial plants. Basically your base pay is $83,000-$85,000.

The schedule for production technicians is shift work. You work 36hrs one week and 48hrs the next. You have 8 hours built in OT every check but only working 36 in one week sort of balances the 8hrs off.

Holidays pay OT but the majority of the extra $20-30k a year comes from working OT. When you work 3 or 4 days a week regular schedule and pick up 1 day of OT a week you still only work 4 or 5 days a week and you pile up the OT. If you work 7 days in a row most plants pay double time on the 7th day.

So yes OT is where the money is at but if you do it right you don't live out there. Pick up a day or two each paycheck and by the end of the year you $100+.

This, and also add in safety training and overall training classes as well. We have up to 8-10 classes a year.

I worked 105 hours when I was offshore for shell. It's really not that bad. I wake up eat go to work get off go workout shower get in bed text and talk to wife and kids. Do that for two weeks come home for two weeks. It turns out I have more time off then a normal work week. And I get to spend two weeks straight with my kids. Most dads don't get home til 6-7 and the kids are only up for an hour or two. Not a lot of family time. I enjoyed my time offshore and I made great money.

People are jealous that uneducated rednecks with no student loan debt are making more than their own professional-degree-required job pays.

Yeah... That's it.

Gone two weeks out of the year and bragging about all the time with your family? I think you might be confused as to how this works.

I leave my house at 7:15, go home for an hour for lunch, then get back home at 4:45 unless traffic is bad. I'm away from my house 8 and a half hours for 5 days a week. Over a 4 week period, that's a grand total of 170 hours away from home. You on the other hand are gone 2 full weeks out of 4 weeks, or 336 hours. I also don't miss any practices, games, holidays, etc. So which one of us sees our family more again?

Exactly. I'm perfectly fine with my degrees and while collar job, while working zero overtime and actually enjoying life.

as someone who retired out of operations I get more info on current operators here than anywhere else LOL.

Sounds like nuffin has changed- Overtime is the ticket. Double time plus holiday pay on holidays. Turnarounds forever. I had some 1000hr+ OT years in the 90's that got me into six figures over 20 years ago.

Biggest consideration for a career choice is the lifestyle associated with shift work. It takes a toll physically in the long run.

This is the key for me. I rarely ever miss a family event and love being able to attend all of the kids stuff including school and church stuff. I really feel bad for my friends and family that are gone for Christmas, thanksgiving , and a lot of other family events.

I'm not sure if it's just that there are quite a few uneducated people in the "shift work" jobs or just the strain it puts on families, but there is a high divorce rate. A distant relative of mine who spends a month at at time overseas doing oil rig work was bragging not long ago and trying to get my to join him due to all of the money. Last month he found out his wife has been cheating on him.

I will say, there are way too many people who shite on the plant workers and rig guys on here. I'm very thankful that these industries are around and provide some very good job in a state/region where there aren't many.

It goes both ways though. There were plenty of operators touting all their money and lack of student loans for a good long time. A lot of the shite they catch they had coming to them.
