Maybe two or three? Definitely not older than three.

I taught swimming lessons. You can familiarize very small kids with the water, but most aren't coordinated enough to actually learn the strokes until around kindergarten or first grade. So your son isn't behind the curve.

This, I remember preschool, learning to ride a bike, etc but swimming predates my first memories. I swam every summer every day as a kid.

We're probably going to do crawfish aquatics for our daughter this summer (she's 3).

My daughter did crawfish aquatics at 18mos.....they had one lady with a 6 month old in there. It was a 6 week class and that little dudes progress was amazing. Hell I was impressed with my daughter but he was less than half her age.

I've tried to understand why people who are not taught to swim drown. Why isn't treading water just the naturally instinctive thing to do? Even dogs figure it out. Any explanations?

I was 7. Couldn't do swim lessons when I was 5 or 6 because I had tubes in my ear and wasn't allowed to put my head underwater.

My mom learned at 3 since she lived a mile away from a beach. My dad was 8 since he was a military brat and ended up in the desert for a few years in a poor area with no pools.

Don't know but as long as I can remember. Just now learning actual swimming, looking back, it must have looked like excessive doggie paddling after a few hundred feet

I've seen kids start 'lessons' of some sort at just months old, and I've seen kids in their teens not know how to swim. I would definitely get him enrolled in some lessons this summer, even if it's just for your own peace of mind. He will likely catch on quickly since he's six (which is a good age to start, but I wouldn't wait much longer), and I'm sure he will be enjoying the water by the end of summer.

If I'm not mistaken, a human's natural instinct is more the ability to hold breath under water - not so much the motor skills involved with swimming.

pretty young. I remember swim lessons at like 5 but that was more so for technique than actually staying afloat.
