The first film released in 96 might be the greatest documentary ever on HBO and it's simply because the darkness, the witch hunting, the borderline low IQ, and the mentally handicapped methadone madness crossed paths with a national case, an inept police force, and the Arkansas justice system. It was riveting TV. And it was 1993-94 when this circus was captured on the '96 release. Remarkable.

What shred of evidence makes you think they did do it?

It definitively did not belong to any of the WM3 which is why they were exonerated.

The DNA from the scene didn't match any of them. We're talking foolproof science. Again, physical evidence ruled them out. The State of Arkansas woild not have let them go If they didn't know they were wrong, even if they won't admit it
That's presumptive. Or they thought they simply couldn't win the retrial for a myriad of reasons. There was a compromised juror from the first trial which certainly would have been brought up. I'm sure the state believes they were unlikely to win the retrial but that doesn't therefore mean they believe the defendants were conclusively not guilty. It only necessarily indicates that they didn't believe they had enough evidence to convict in a retrial.

I think Byers, firsthand and alone, came to the realization that PL part 2 was dressing him up like quite the pig and his friction toward the three and the crew was going to do him no favors. He certainly turned "babyface" in part III.

The truck wash used to be a couple of hundred feet from the wooded area they were murdered. Lots of transients in that area with I-40 and I-55 merging and sort of being a bottleneck there.
The Bojangles restaurant was barely a half a mile west of there BTW.
Anyone know how a documentary crew was tipped off about the case? I honestly think they'd still be in jail if not for widespread knowledge of the case.

a friend of mines son played the part of Echols in a recent movie ( Devils knot) had a few brief conversations about it , its not the most pleasant subject matter ,these sort of things disgust me more than interest me.
that aside, Echols refusal to admit guilt and be released says something about the kid. If you did it and ostensibly will get away with it, get out of prison and be a cult hero of sorts to the Hollywood crowd and be thought of as innocent if only by everyone but the law enforcement that fricked it all up to being with... ?
To me, that's a strong statement of innocence

Yes. Innocent people don't confess.

Oh yeah, he was nuts. I enjoyed the part where he sang his song he made and at the end said something along the lines of finding out a lot about himself and that you can record any song for $39.

The DNA shows that there was likely reasonable doubt, not that they flat out didn't do it. There was a pendant found that had both Echols and one of the victims DNA, but that evidence was legally excluded (forgive me, I do not know why). So, you can't say they absolutely didn't do it, Arkansas merely accepted the fact that they likely wouldn't be legally guilty (reasonable doubt) in the event of a new trial, which was going to happen.

I would hava taken that ALford Plea in a second, too. I'll give a guilty verdict to get out of jail and sue the shite out of the state of Arkansas.
ARkansas showed what they were truly about with their joke of a judicial system. Also, that WM police chief? The "Cult expert" who got a doctorate in the mail, and the original judge? Horrible leadership and accountability on so many sides.
Baldwin's first lawyer was pretty tough. Too bad he was up against a judge who was somehow living in 1890.

Terrible handling of the case by police, judge, prosecutors and an idiot juryman.
Embarrassing for the whole state.
