Checking your work email on a weekend or a holiday? In France, where employees have been granted “the right to disconnect,” that’s now against the law.

Buried inside a recently enacted — and hotly contested — French labor reform bill is an amendment banning companies of 50 or more employees from sending emails after typical work hours. “The right to disconnect” amendment, as it’s so called, is aimed at minimizing the negative impacts of being excessively plugged in.

“All the studies show there is far more work-related stress today than there used to be, and that the stress is constant,” Benoit Hamon of the French National Assembly told the BBC earlier this month. “Employees physically leave the office, but they do not leave their work. They remain attached by a kind of electronic leash— like a dog. The texts, the messages, the emails — they colonize the life of the individual to the point where he or she eventually breaks down.”

The French really know how to retreat from work, it's like they have a natural tendency of retreat programmed in.

Didn't I read that they have the shortest avg. work week in the World? an average of 30 hours worked in the week.

Jesus France get your shite together and use that free time to stop Islamic terrorism in your country

What pussies. Man up and do your work whenever it needs to get done. This is ridiculous.

Funny how most Americans don't remember anything before WWII.

Well history classes today are almost exclusively about MLK and the civil rights movement.

Sounds like a well-intentioned piece of legislation that was could have a lot of negative side-effects.

I would hope employers get a lot of leeway. There has to be exceptions. Has to be. Emergencies happen. People want to finish what they're working on before they go home. What's "after typical work hours?" 5:07pm?

Don't know if you need a law for this kind of thing, but if that's what the French want and it fits with their culture, than whatever, I guess.

Lunch time is also "sacred". They take a full Lunch hour (or longer), and enjoy themselves.

I wish I worked in France.

Yeah I know about all of that, from Napolean conquering Europe, to the ferocious defense of Gaul by Vercingetorex against Caesar. And even the Norman conquest of England, the French saving Americas arse during the Revolution as well. But they folded so hard against Germany and have been such liberal pansies since then it fits.

Good luck getting that to fly for the IT department. If a critical server goes down over the weekend resulting in lost revenue on Monday, I doubt the company is going to be very understanding.

I have had bosses that have been explicit with their expectations that I respond to weekend emails. Good thing I fish a lot and don't get good reception on the boat.

I normally don't check email until Monday AM. If my boss needs me to do something, he'll call. Otherwise, it can wait.

Exactly, its pretty ridiculous. They have had unbelievable militaries. They experienced unspeakable casualties by the hundreds of thousands in WW1 and held the line, despite having a military that had not adapted to modern warfare yet.

They faced in WW2 one of the greatest militaries in history with an unbelievable battle strategy. They couldn't face it. No one would have been able to stand against the blitzkrieg.

People at work both up and down the chain know that if it doesn't require my immediate attention the we will talk on Monday, if I'm on vacation I might as well be dead to you for that period of time. If it's something urgent that needs attention then it is what it is and I get it done. I work to live I don't live to work.

Well the french do owe us. We LET them take back Paris as we were kicking German Arse. If it werent for us they'd be goose steppin'.

As for the OP, im not one for making laws every time there is an issue, but I do think it's a good practice. Some employers straight up abuse folks with the way we are connected now days.

And we owe the French for their help in the American Revolution. If it weren't for them, we'd be drinking tea and playing cricket.

I agree that a culture of encouraging weekend work or threatening lack of response on weekends is unhealthy for any organization. People need to get away. It makes for better, rested, and more productive employees.

I'm more referring to emergencies. Also, if I have a lot on my to-do list, I will work late and send emails to people after hours with updates on progress, etc. I don't expect those people to respond right then and there, but it's nice to have those emails sent and not have to worry about it the next day.
