It's fricking trashy! And you can be confident that I'm experienced in the trashy department.

I find it incredibly hard to believe so many people on this board have never heard of a money dance or been to a wedding where it occurred.

I've been to 3 weddings in BR, 2 in New Orleans, and a bunch in Florida and the Northeast. Never seen it. Couples I've spoken to typically got $6-9k at the wedding wedding, just in envelopes. Didn't have to do any trashy dance begging for money.

I've heard of a money dance, just never been to a reception where it took place. That includes many weddings in NOLA and one in New Iberia. I figured it wasn't a thing in NOLA. Does the bride not care that her wedding gown is getting multiple pin holes?

I have had some coworkers that walked around with money safety pinned to their shirt/blouse on their birthday, if that helps. Also, I've been to a couple where someone did the gator at the reception.

I've only heard about them but evidently the bride and groom just dance (in normal fashion) and you toss money on the floor? This is my understanding- it's a trashy ( yet labeled as fun) way to ask for money

Bridesmaid has a purse you drop the money in. Dunno what the groomsman does as I've never danced with a groom.

Seen the money dance twice. The bride from the first one is a doctor now.

Is that the tradition when you pay to dance with the bride? Some call it cultcha. I call it the gateway to a stripper career and prostitution.

Like I said, I'm sure there are a few situations like this, but half this thread is people who've never seen it in their life, and that is hard to believe if you've been going to weddings as a kid/adult for 20 years.

Most of the time it is done in a bag or something instead of directly on the dress, at least in the modern variant. That being said, I don't see why she should give a shite since it will never be worn again...

Nah, they give the money directly to the bride/groom.

I do take issue with the bolded portion though - if you're going to accept cash as a gift at the wedding in envelopes or other forms, what is the harm in doing a money dance.

I've been to weddings where I participated in the wedding dance and brought cash specifically for that purpose in lieu of another gift. If the dance didn't occur, I would have simply given it to the couple. I've also been to weddings where a money dance occurred and I didn't participate in the slightest. No one is out there begging for it.

Whether it is trashy or not depends on the situation. It would be wrong to claim all money dances are trashy.

I promise you I'm not BS'ing. Just asked my wife and gave her no context and she says she's never seen it. She thought it was maybe more prominent in the Italian community, yet she's partially Italian and has not seen it amongst those cousins. I don't believe it's as common as some think.

Bull. fricking. shite.

As NewIberiaHaircut attested at the top of this page, he knows trashy, and if the wedding was in New Iberia, a money dance happened. You must have been in the bathroom.

I knew you would say that, but this was a couple of young professionals with wealthy parents.

I believe you.

Maybe you're right.

I'll say this - if it is something that is common in your family, there is almost an expectation to do it so people can give you money as a gift. I think it comes off as trashy to someone who has already brought a gift and thinks people are out there looking for more.

There aren't a ton of those running around. I may know them - care to say the last name of the bride and groom?

I'm highly skeptical because I think many people say it to boost their "e-class" - just like the people who often say they're not on Facebook or other social media during those threads.

Is it a Louisiana thing?
