I found the quote from the book. It's on page 17 of Super Freakonomics:

I sure hope you are not at work right now, wasting your employers dollar. May as well have stayed home because you are on your period.

But in my opinion, with the medicine available today, women should no longer use this as an excuse to stay home. Unless there was some extreme case...

I agree but i think it is just an excuse in most cases. One of my best friends has lost a few jobs because of the work she misses. She tells me her cramps are terrible...i know her very well and she really just doesn't want to work. They never prevent her from partying and fishing

If chicks miss more work than men, I don't see why they wouldn't get paid less in general. You'd tend to pay more for someone more reliable statistically. The difference isn't the. 77 Obama quoted though

I'm probably not going to pay you as much as I would a man though. I mean, that's just silly.

Oh and men and women have same rules when it applies to sick days and PTO... excluding the whole giving birth thing, ...

The rules are either the same or they aren't. And you just proved they aren't.

Also, I can't tell you how many times I've seen women promise to come back to work after maternity leave (rack up all kinds of healthcare bills on the group) and then never return to work.

According to that study, females took 12.9 days off versus 8.12 for men. So what are the men's excuse for all that sick leave?

And? They are entitled to whatever their benefits package entitled them to.

Even if that only factors in pregnancy. Which we realize it is important and you should get paid for your time off. But why would an employer want to hire an equally qualified woman over a man, pay them the exact same, if it is more than likely they will miss an extended amount of time from work more than once.

Happy Box?

By one study on Italians? If that is what gets you off Wik, sure. Totally got me. Day is ruined.

And that wasn't petty of me. You talk about how much women miss work, but if you are currently at work spending a good 30 minutes researching some study (unless this is your job)... you are essentially taking 30 minutes of productivity off your work day. Hypocritical.

Totally ignoring the fact that I am also not working while typing this... :)

Probably because she could use the right spelling of a word.

Men don't get near the amount of paternity leave as women do maternity.

Men are less likely to miss work. It's basic common sense. I know there are laws on the books, but financial impacts play into things like this.

focus on the typo and not the question, love it

Paternity leave is much more extensive and prevalent outside the US. Cant remember exactly which countries though. Discussed it in length in one of my classes though

ORLY?

Start by talking to your company's human resources department. Many employers are required by federal law to allow their employees (both men and women) 12 weeks of unpaid family leave after the birth or adoption of a child under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA).

I answered your question. I guess we can add critical thinking skills to the list as well.

I would be interested to see comparisons in the nursing field for pay.
