For me, it was the scale of it all. So many did so much....

Same way I felt at the Viet Nam wall.

Go on a tour group. I went on a tour last year and thought it was kinda fricked up that I was there on a tour bus driving by as a family buried a veteran. But it's a beautiful and historic place

Fun fact: The view from the Arlington House was JFK's favorite view of DC. And that is why he's buried right there a little bit down the hill

Spent my first three years in the military (81-84) as a member of the 1st Battalion, 3rd Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard). Performed many simple honor funerals there. An incredibly sobering and somber place.

I remember reading George C. Scott having similar duty in the immediate post-WW2 era, and he said it damn near made an alcoholic of him.

I found the Normandy cemetery where the D-day casualties are buried to be more impactful.

Two of Teddy Roosevelts sons are buried there. Quentin was a pilot in WW1 and was shot down. Teddy Jr was a General who was a MOH recipient and died in France about a month after the landings (also had some clashes with Patton and Omar Bradley concerning his style of command).

As I recall, Roosevelt was Terry de la Mesa Allen's assistant division commander, and they both liked to take a drink.
