I haven't been since I was eight and it's always intrigued me. For folks who have gone recently, any suggestions on the must not miss? I want to let my children feel and understand what it means and the impact of the ultimate sacrifice in protecting our freedoms and our way of life. Going to do the obvious changing the guards, JFK enteral flames, etc... What else has been your experience and tips? Much Appreciated. I have a Great Great Uncle who is buried there and that's a must see.. Just looking for a few helpful tips. Thanks for any help. ????

Don't have anything to add to that, but I wish I had gone on up to Arlington House while there. I still have yet to work that into a trip.

Arlington House is worth stopping by and hearing about George Washington Parke-Custis...

I'm always intrigued with the statue and grave of Field Marshal Sir John Dill, who was buried in Arlington at the express order of GEN George Marshall in 1944. Sir John is the only British soldier buried there.

It's also interesting to read the inscriptions on the non-standard tombstones, you can pick up a lot of "damn, I didn't know that" information from them...

When facing the Kennedy gravesites, to your right, and slightly down hill are some Supreme Court Justice gravesites.
Definitely check out Arlington House.
The Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is something you will never forget. I was able to film my son laying a wreath there. There is a spot they will let you film from away from the crowd, if you are lucky. I was able to do this by asking politely and early.

I ran into Claire Chennault's tombstone. I definitely wasn't searching for it, but was very cool to see. Led the Flying Tigers in China against Japan. Grew up in Louisiana.

Audie Murphy is just a short walk from the Tombs of the Unknowns. He was one of my childhood heros. I read his book and watched his movie "To Hell and Back" many, many times.

I'm not sure where the gravesite is, but there is John J. Pershing's grave. The remains of some of the Challenger and Columbia astronauts are buried there, as well as Apollo 1 astronauts Gus Grissom and Roger Chaffee.

Ranger buddy of mine is buried there. 60-5791. I just visited him a couple weeks ago.

It's a humbling experience visiting that place. Lots of American heroes buried there.

I found the Normandy cemetery where the D-day casualties are buried to be more impactful. I suppose bc Arlington has a lot of people who died peacefully at an old age. While Normandy, these were all young guys violently cut down in the prime of their lives, most of them not famous. And most probably died before even knowing if the invasion was even a success.

Arlington House. The view from there is awesome

Tomb of the unknown, and changing of the guard

If you buy the tour ticket (I encourage it), get off the bus at the Marine (Iwo Jima) Memorial and do the short walk (you'll have to go thru security again). Also, great view of DC from there

Air Force memorial

If youre going to spend a lot of time there: Coast Guard Memorial, the Space Shuttle Challenger Memorial, Spanish-American War Memorial, the USS Maine Memorial

**ANC Explorer is a web-based and mobile application that enables the public to locate gravesites, events or other points of interest throughout the cemetery; view front-and-back headstone photos and points of interest; and receive directions to those locations. ANC Explorer also offers self-guided tours, easy access to general information

This week is a really bad week for being anywhere near Washington. The city will be virtually shut down because of the Inauguration and all the lunatics coming into town to cause havoc. People are being warned away from the city, and anyone working in the city is advised to telecommute. Hopefully you can rearrange your visit for a more 'normal' week.

It really is. Took my 9 year old there last year. We got there late and only saw the last changing at the tomb of the unknown. Amazing experience. We tried to stop and read as many markers as we could. Daughter said "wow there's so many". I told her is because our freedom is paid for in blood.

We also went to Mt Vernon that day. It was amazing. Our whole D.C. Trip drove home the fact that the guys that founded this country had huge fricking balls of steel.

Every American should go at least once.

Lee Marvin's tombstone reminds me of Doc Holliday's in Glenwood Springs, CO. 45 cal. bullets, playing cards, and coins.
