What does it mean when someone says a car has a mild cam sound? I googled but I need it explained in baby terms apparently

knocking noise?
If it's a positive then it could mean it has that rumble from an oversize cam...glub, glub...glub glub glub

bent cam?
That would be my guess

Nasty uneven idle sound from high-profile camshafts. Also referred to as a "lope". I would link an example but the link button seems to be crashing Safari for me

He didn't say. I didn't ask about it when the guy said it because I didn't know what he was talking about. I guess I will just ask him what he meant by it.

Thanks. Does that affect engine performance or anything? Or is it just a weird sound when idle?

It (probably) means that the car has a hotter cam installed, timing is bumped, car is quicker off the line, uses more gas, sounds like a hot rod, etc.

Tall cams give more power at high RPMs because the taller lobes push the valves out farther, allowing the engine to take in more air and expel exhaust faster.
Vette feel free to correct as you see fit.

I think OP may be worried about engine longevity, no way to tell, TBH.
Depends on how far the builder went into the motor, headers, etc...

Some cars have jump cams, they sound bad arse but performance wise they suck. When they hit the gas they spit and sputter

That it sounds badass. Sorta like a Harley idling.

Mild cam means it is not much bigger than stock. Cam math can get pretty complicated. Basically all an engine is is an air pump. Camshaft controls the valve operations. How high they open, for how long, and speed at which they open/close this moving more air in and out of the engine. With more air you need more fuel, and make more power.

This is a relatively mild cam: LINK
Spec wise it is tiny 218/222...but at the time, tuning was tough on the 3rd gen Hemi so that cam was on the larger size.
Best way to describe a mild cam is "a slightly choppy idle"...think similar to maybe an offshore powerboat.

This is correct.

it idles rough because of the extended open times of intake and exhaust valves, to the point where both valves are open at the same time. called overlap. overlap allows for much improved airflows at higher engine speed. more fuel in and out equals more power
listen to the before and after here: the after is "cam lope." fairly extreme rather than mild

Nice. What year?
And while I don't know shite about cams I can hear that rumble in my ears now with a Chevelle pictured and it brings me back to high school. shite. It makes me realize I'm vintage.
