Videogames Might Be Keeping Young Men Out of the Workforce

America’s young men are increasingly giving up on work in order to slay virtual aliens and fight videogame wars, new research suggests.
Academics from Princeton University, the University of Chicago and the University of Rochester say there’s ample evidence that since 2000, men who would otherwise be working are instead being drawn into immersive virtual worlds, giving up paychecks in the process.
What’s more, these men are reporting higher levels of happiness compared with those who work, and they’re drawing on the support of mom and dad to stay there. The paper warns these men’s absence from the labor force is likely to negatively affect their employment and earnings prospects for the rest of their lives.

“Our estimates suggest that technology growth for computer and gaming leisure can explain as much as three-quarters of that 4% greater decline for younger men,” the paper said.
These young videogame dropouts are now averaging 520 hours a year on the computer, with 60% of that time devoted to videogames, dwarfing other pursuits like socializing with friends in the real world.
quote:
The men who essentially drop out don’t end up getting by via government support. Instead, they’re enabled by family members. The researchers found that nearly 70% of these men who aren’t working lived with a close relative in 2015, versus 46% in 2000.

But muh boomers! Muh Bernie!
Time to face it, we are approaching something resembling a Huxleyan dystopia. Many millennials, lacking pride and work ethic, are addicted to shooting aliens, and are enabled by their shitty parents to pursue a life of decay and worthlesness. Very sad.

The USA is following the the path of the rise and fall of all great civilizations -- just at a much, much quicker rate

Who do you think is enabling these pussies to do this?

Sounds like the problem is the previous generation that's letting them squat at their home without a job and playing video games.

that's a hell of a lot better than heroine, which is what the majority of Gen X is addicted to

Why go to work when I can bang and kill prostitutes all day in GTA5?

Also, correlation is not causation. I know plenty of folks who work good, full-time jobs that play video games.

Just like millennials to blame someone else for their misfortunes rather than take their responsibility of their own pitiful path

Unfortunately work keeps me away from video games

It's a good time to be a high achiever.

Maybe both share the blame.

I'm not a millennial.
And truth hurts. People bitch about millennial attitudes but who raised them that way?

I truly don't understand this. It is absolutely so easy to live the sweet life in your 20s.
Go to college
Get a degree in something useful
Graduate on time or early
Get a masters and/or MBA
Get every license and certification in said field(6 figures will follow shortly)
Don't get married
Travel in you spare time and hook up with local chicks.
I know several guys in their 20s that did/are doing exactly this. I hate them simply because I didn't do it

To some extent, boomers, as well as the generation that follows shortly thereafter.
But there is a certain notion of pride that eludes many of this generation. Countless losers across America are content to be the equivalent of welfare queens instead of endeavoring to build skills, contribute to society, and go make something of themselves.

Who do you think taught them to act the way they do?
You've backed yourself into a corner to where you're basically making the argument that Boomers are shitty parents that have no control over their children.

I do think there is something to that story the other day about the bailout phenomenon where people are flaking out on real life encounters to stay home or whatever. That said, I remember Penn from Penn and Teller had a good rant about people critical of video game nerds. He basically said there are thousands of kids like him who have done well in life and were kind of shaped and inspired by things like video games.

Checking in. I am a lifetime gamer. I definitely don't play as much as my college days but I don't mind having a few beers and gaming with some buddies online.

Sometimes I'm real amazed at how I've rarely touched video games compared to most.

it honestly sounds like this is the problem with the OP as well, jealously is a bitch
I wounder how much more jealous he would get:
when he finds out that a lot of video gamers can actually game and become millionaires from doing so

I didn't buy GTA 5 because i didnt think i could hold a job while playing that game.
I'd get way too addicted to it
