The DoD expects that the B-52 will be in the inventory until about 2040, so right around 90 years.

I stand corrected. That's like the Air Force still flying this today...

I came close when I was active duty and attended Maple Flag. The commander ended the incentive rides 2 days before I was supposed to go up in a 15.

Seems like I remember seeing something recently about a guy who's a B-52 pilot today who's grandfather was a Buff pilot back in the 50s-60s. to give some perspective of how old that aircraft is, This was the top of the line U.S. fighter at the time the B-52 came on line...

That's amazing. To think we are contemplating a complete non manned flight strategy. While I don't agree with it, advancement in aviation, IMO, doesn't get the recognition it should.

Not really, I just went with the shortest estimate I could find. It'll probably still be flying in 2050.

and it goes alone, it's got enough juice to shut down just about the entire east coast, a few years ago I knew of a guy that was out at red flag in a wild weasel, they were to do their thing right before the buffs and were told in the brief not to frick with them under any circumstances, so of course this guy locks on to the buff, the buff sort of swats him off like a fly, guy locks on again, the buff goes OK mofo, you asked for it, completely fried the motherboard and trashed out about $100k of electronics

JTAC's and FISTER's, Joint Firepower brothas!

First aerial kill by an A-10 was against an Iraqi Hind. Two of them took off, one of them didn't land. There's a video of it somewhere. First plane downed in the 1st Gulf War was a Bronco, Hunter Killer Team (OV-10A and D) for what it's worth.

Coolest goddamned A-10 thing I ever saw was being at NTC in 1999 on a ridge line at a couple of thousand feet up, when a flight of four came right next to us at eyeball level and about 50 yards away. So close, you feel like you could touch the wingtip. Imagine that scene in "Empire of the Sun" where he's hootin' abbout the P-51 flyby and times that by eleventy billion. Holy 'Murrica boner

A-10, one of my favorite aircraft. I hope they get around to re-engine them. The thing spits out America.

I would think the B-52 fleet will get a re-engine in the future. I had heard they wanted to replace the 8 engines to 4 turbofans, but didn't want to spend the money. The thing is a giant dump truck in the sky.

I love that they basically built an aircraft around a huge arse gun. Hear those things flying around east of Fort Polk all the time.

Many, many years ago, I got to see the Hogs do their thing down range at Ft. Carson. Hell of a show.

The next day I got to visit and talk to the crew chiefs and other support personnel at Peterson AFB.

Hell of a team.

were plans on keeping a fleet of them flying like up to the 2050+ range. That would mean this aircraft had a lifespan of about 100 years

The AF does not have a definitive retirement date. The airframe is structurally capable of flying well into the 2050s. AF has a big decision looming on bomber force structure as the LRS-B comes on line in the 2020s.

We are looking in to re-engining the BUFF, but if it happens it wil still be 8 engines.

+1. I watched a documentary a few weeks ago where a pilot said that opening up the gun feels like the plane is coming apart around you. Said the feeling never gets old.

23rd TFW, direct descendants of the Flying Tigers. My parents have a place in Grant Parish, and the A-10's would come over us at tree-top level. Couldn't hear them till they were right on top of you. Awesome show.

One of the things I remember about the Hogs, was that Chad Hennings, an All American DT from the Air Force Academy flew the Hog in the Gulf during the '90s. I would imagine it was a pretty tight fit in the cockpit.
