most of those guys are pretty good shits, in fact I've run across more AF weenies, as a general rule naval aviators usually have their shite together pretty well

As expected. It was just humorous to see a bunch of people spouting off like they knew everything about aviation because they're buddy was a navy pilot.

It's a gun with a heavily armored airplane built onto it. It has to be one of the longest lasting jet air crafts in the US military.

Always walked a little taller knowing those guys were overhead.

Hearing that 9 line brought back some memories.

just funning, the 'hawg is an awesome weapons platform, I really don't know where it is on the length of service list but it's been around a while, we have a couple of 'hawg drivers on here but I haven't seen any posts by them in some time

Seems like I remember seeing something recently about a guy who's a B-52 pilot today who's grandfather was a Buff pilot back in the 50s-60s. to give some perspective of how old that aircraft is, This was the top of the line U.S. fighter at the time the B-52 came on line...

And it had only come out 5 years earlier than the B-52's first flight.

Think I found it....

LINK

quote:

MINOT AIR FORCE BASE, N.D. — When 1st Lt. Daniel Welch arrived at Minot Air Force Base in January, he became part of the same squadron his grandfather commanded in the 1970s.

That squadron is the 23rd Bomb Squadron, a unit of the 5th Bomb Wing at Minot AFB.

Welch, a B-52 co-pilot, is keeping up his family's tradition as a B-52 Stratofortress flight officer.

Both his grandfather, retired Col. Don Sprague, of Sacramento, Calif., and his father, retired Lt. Col. Don Welch, of Las Vegas, were B-52 aviators.

Three generations all on the same bomber. That's pretty cool.

That would be akin to my time in the army being served as a tanker on the M4 Sherman rather than the M1A1 Abrams.

I don't claim to be an aviation expert but I do take interest in the subject. From what little I know, I think I'd like to be flying a "hawg" if I was in the military. Give me a huge gun and a fortified cockpit. Pre-stealth/big coconuts flying. Not like they are muting that beast of a gun when the come in. "Here I come, shoot all you want". lol.

My grandparents had a camp on Bundicks Lake when I was a wee lad. Watched one or two A-10s on training missions.

it really is and no short term plans to retire the plane either, projected to remain in service(as of a couple of years ago) for up to another 50 years, I could see that changing though

Seems like i saw a show on the B-52 some time ago where they said there were plans on keeping a fleet of them flying like up to the 2050+ range. That would mean this aircraft had a lifespan of about 100 years. That would be like us still flying this today...

The DoD expects that the B-52 will be in the inventory until at least 2040, so right around 90 years, if they don't extend it. The newest B-52 is over 50 years old already.

Once we've got air superiority, nothing else can really match it in terms of loitering around at 50,000 feet and then dropping 70,000 pounds of bad day on someone's head when the call comes up as cheaply as it can.
