Looking for my daughters first car as well. I think i will go with the Elantra. The newer ones have airbags everywhere inside. Had a friend who walked away from a head on collision, while driving one, unscathed. I saw the pictures and he was sitting in a virtual cocoon after impact.

check out the safety ratings at this website:

LINK

I am always surprised at how most people don't consider safety, especially with a new driver.

MPG is not even that important.

And to all those people recommending old cars, well, they are shite.

I offered mine a '93 Jeep, standard, but she refused. Fine by me but her mother broke down and bought an Accord. It was a great car.

Looked at these for my daughter, along with the Altima and Sonata. We went with a 1 year old Sonata.

Yes, get an inexperienced teen driver a vehicle that will flip over at the drop of a hat. Brilliant idea.

When was the last time you saw a jeep flip or roll over?

Don't get me wrong, an accord or Camry has a lot less chance of rollover than a wrangler but that goes for any SUV and is a lot more blown up than reality shows due to a history of rollovers from the jeeps inception to the civilian market up to the early '80's.

Love the Volvo's safety record. Was gonna get one for my 16yo but it's a pain not having a dealership within 2 hours for maintainence and such.

Thanks everyone. Some really good replies in here along with some predictable ones.

I'd like to kill 2 birds with one stone in trying to get a decent enough car that will get her thru high school and college while not making her a slave to the gas pump.

The Volvo S40's must have been discontinued. They are harder to find used locally now.

VetteGuy, thanks for the link.
