Police Chases are now racist

quote:

A first-of-its-kind investigation by USA TODAY shows that black people across the nation – both innocent bystanders and those fleeing the police – have been killed in police chases at a rate nearly three times higher than everyone else.

USA TODAY examined federal records for 5,300 fatal pursuits since 1999, when the government started tracking the races of people killed in car crashes. USA TODAY also took a deeper look at 702 chases in 2013 and 2014, reviewing thousands of pages of police documents and hours of video of pursuits across the nation.

Among the findings:

Blacks have been killed at a disproportionate rate in pursuits every year since 1999. On average, 90 black people were killed each year in police chases, nearly double what would be expected based on their percentage of the population.

Deadly pursuits of black drivers were twice as likely to start over minor offenses or non-violent crimes. In 2013 and 2014, nearly every deadly pursuit triggered by an illegally tinted window, a seat-belt violation or the smell of marijuana involved a black driver.

Black people were more likely than whites to be chased in more crowded urban areas, during peak traffic hours and with passengers in their cars, all factors that can increase the danger to innocent bystanders. Chases of black motorists were about 70 percent more likely to wind up killing a bystander.

You need to look at how many were killed in police chases versus how many were involved in police chases...not how many were killed in police chases versus population numbers.

Black males make up 6% of the population but account for ~40% of murders yearly

Why don't they write a piece on how disproportinate that statistic is? Maybe that has something to do with it. They commit more violent crimes per capita

NY Times sucks at statistics

This statistic does not prove what they think it does.

The number of crimes committed by blacks is much higher than would be expected based on their percentage of the population.

Maybe they shouldn't run form the police when stopped for a minor offense.

So blacks are more likely to be chased were most black people live, that took a lot of research!

The article could be considered racist as it implies Blacks run for no reason and are more likely to crash i guess

Why is it so hard to understand that you don't run from the police?
If I see flashing lights behind me I am pulling over.

Did they look at the records of the individuals that were pulled over?
It may have been a seat belt violation but why run over ticket?
Outstanding warrants is my guess

Because that's racist. Nothing is anyone's fault.

Inconsequential Crimes

Deadly pursuits of black drivers were twice as likely to start over minor offenses or non-violent crimes that posed little danger to the public until a police officer decided to give chase.

That’s what happened in Humble, Texas, in May 2013. Two women grabbed an armful each of shirts from Macy’s in a suburban Houston shopping mall, climbed into a car driven by a third woman and drove away. All three were black.

The shirts were valuable enough that the crime qualified as a felony, but police would not figure that out until later.

A Humble police officer caught up with the women as they were pulling out of the mall, and chased them as they tried to speed away.

We didn’t know what to do. I’ve never been in this situation before,” one of the women, Ashley Howard, later told an officer from her hospital bed. “We just completely didn’t know whether to stop or keep on going.

So black people are worse drivers.

imagine what the stats for police chases with Asian women would be, if Asian women ever ran from cops
