Helps explain why Indy and Nascar is under represented by persons of color.

How dare those evil police do their job of enforcing the laws and chasing criminals.

So black people recklessly run from the cops at a much higher rate according to this study?

How is this news?

That's only because cops are racist and are watching black people closely. Then when those black people commit a crime the police chase them. All because they are black.

That would be racist

Bingo.

I wonder how many people are oblivious to that.

I got halfway though that article and couldn't take anymore. That has to be one of the most dishonest hack jobs I've seen in a while

This is literally the worst piece of shite article i have ever seen

1.They dont even look at the total number of high speed chases by race. you can't just look at the total number of fatalities and draw conclusions. Maybe black people are more likely to get into a high speed chase to begin with so naturally there will be more fatalities.

2. They say that blacks are more likely to die in high speed chases at night. Which could mean a number of things. Its more dangerous to drive fast at night, for example. Might not have anything to do with race.

Such terrible journalism

USA TODAY found no evidence that officers overtly considered a suspect’s race in deciding whether to stop or pursue. But research suggests that a suspect’s race can subtly influence how police react to him or her.

Well, no shite.

If poor whites in shitty cars are committing more crimes than anyone else, the cops are going to treat/respond differently to them than anyone else.

Blacks have to run from the police because they know the cops are going to kill them.

Blacks and dogs, target practice for cops.

ETA:. It sounds like Dodge Charger is not the best car to use when running from the PoPo.

I don't know why anyone would run, you are just adding charges, even if you get away it's going to come back on you later.

This idiot I went to school with was arrested recently and he would have had a minor charge, but in his brilliance he decided the kick out the police car window and get out. He was injured and of course charged with a felony.

The felony violated his probation and now what would have been maybe 5-6 months at JPP turned into 7 years at Hunt.

somewhat true

I don't get how online advertising works.

Are there really people who look at a really shitty article and then say "Oh, this article sucks but look at that cool ad on the side?!"

It never fails to amaze me how many people just don't pay attention to what's going on around them. It is what you don't see and/or didn't expect that will kill you.

Basing it on population alone is disingenuous.

This kind of study is so fricking misleading it legitimately pisses me off.

That being said, police chases should be highly regulated. Outside of a violent felon, it should be avoided. More than 2400 bystanders and 2600 passengers have died in police chases since 1979, roughly 150 per year, and estimates are that more than 3500 innocent people are injured per year in police chases. That is insane. I'm not suggesting it is the fault of the police, but a chase that kills a bystander due to an burnt taillight isn't worth it. Get the license plate and make/model and call it a day.

The author is clearly racist as evidenced by his interpretation of the data.

Blacks have been killed at a disproportionate rate in pursuits every year since 1999. On average, 90 black people were killed each year in police chases, nearly double what would be expected based on their percentage of the population.

Shouldn't this be studied compared to arrest rates, not population?

quote:

Deadly pursuits of black drivers were twice as likely to start over minor offenses or non-violent crimes.
Does this simply mean that black drivers are twice as likely to flee after minor offenses?

quote:

Chases of black motorists were about 70 percent more likely to wind up killing a bystander.
But who is responsible? Does it mean the cops want to catch the black person more badly than the white person, so the cops are reckless and dangerous? Or does it mean the black driver is more reckless and dangerous and responsible?
