Somewhere Ronald Reagan is smiling.

Does the laser maintain is trajectory until it hits something?

Damn that's pretty scary to imagine how that can be engineered over time.
If other countries have that how can we counter it

Let's get one of these bad boys on the moon ASAP.

So, the future has finally arrive. First, teledildonics. Now, laser beams. We're living in a golden age.

It's a focused photon wave. It will travel in a straight line losing intensity as it travels. I do not believe it can reach space yet. But once the laser beam exits the atmosphere, I'd imagine it would continue unabated until it hits something.

But soon we'll finally be able to give Saturn it's comeuppance for always flaunting it's gaudy, garish rings and never sharing, right?

Honestly Bro, I wouldn't be surprised if there is a secret satellite already in orbit with this capability
I know my father helped develop an alternative to the laser system. His company developed a Neutron Beam gun using electromagnets to accelerate particles towards a target.
This was back in the late 80's during Reagan's Star Wars Defensive initiative.

Sorry bro but the moon is in space and lasers don't work in space cause there's no air or gravity. We could shoot a missile at the moon though.

How can you generate the necessary power for something like that?

For the satellite system, it was a nuke reactor
My Dad's division was taken off the project immediately after they provided a "proof of concept" demo to the military in 1989. They showed the DoD that their gun could shoot a pinhole through 6' of concrete damn near instantaneoulsy.
He has always wondered if they were able to miniaturize the NBG enough to be loaded on a shuttle.
It was a running joke in our house when each time the news reported "The Shuttle launched today with a classified satellite for the military" that his baby finally made it to space.

Just wait until particle beam weaponry becomes possible. A weapon in earth orbit capable of devasting global strikes.

That's actually pretty cool.
