Who is Robert Gray?

quote:

A truck driver who spent no money on his campaign and hasn't had his picture taken in 15 or 20 years has won the Democratic nomination for governor.

A surprise came on the Democratic side in the race for Mississippi Governor.

Robert Gray, a retired firefighter and truck driver, is the democratic nominee who admitted to the Associated Press that he didn't even vote in Tuesday's election.

"I was in Jackson and had to do a lot of stuff and just lost track of time, to tell you the truth," said Gray, who was in south Mississippi by election night.

With 99% of the vote counted, Gray pulled 51%, narrowly avoiding a runoff with Vicki Slater, who was backed by party leaders.

Gray said he made only a few campaign appearances and was at a loss to explain his strong showing. He said some might have voted for him because he has a common name.

"They didn't know me from anybody else," Gray said of Democratic primary voters.

He said his campaign was not backed by any big-name politician or group.

That's a pretty big election to win like that.

Name reminded the ladies of Christian Grey. He won all the votes because of 50 Shades of Grey. That's my theory.

Oh, its definitely true. A magic combination of Republicans voting in Democratic primaries to have a say in local elections, the guy being listed first on the ballot, and being the only man running against two women for Governor made it happen.

He should begin every sentence of every answer with "I'm just a lowly truck driver." In Mississippi, he might just pull the upset. I heard a little of his interview earlier - he's an average Joe working man, not some Democrat hack.

He wants to improve education in Mississippi, and bring some jobs. Its a simple platform. The problem is the Mississippi DEM party is just horrible. They can't fundraise, they can't get their message out. This is why someone like this wins an election over a millionaire attorney that has the backing of the party.

So I wonder if he should actually campaign now...or not since not campaigning is what got him to this point

I'm not sure it would help if they were well run. The voters are the issue here.
