That was painful to watch. Both coaches should be fired.

Agreed. I can see the principals' point as well. River dale and Smyrna are both in the same school district - both principals pleaded with the TSSAA to suspend the coaches and let the girls play on.

Both coaches will probably lose their job over this. I told my wife that if my daughter was on the team, I would have had a hard time with this one - and I am the most "stay out of the coaches way" parent you will ever find.

Both coaches should have been more subtle, but I get the strategy.

Just flip the court and have them try to score for the other team.

Would have been fun to see the refs and scoreboard operator keep up with this one.

Sounds like they have some issues with their bracket process. Just like in the nfl with the draft, if you incentivize a team to lose, then you can't blame them for doing it.

Exactly. Rational actors responding to the incentives provided to them.

Why do you punish the kids that were just following the orders of their coaches

And why do you punish coaches that were employing a strategy intended to maximize the ultimate outcome for their respective squads?

WE ARE NOT GOING TO START TRYING TO SHOOT AND SCORE FOR THE OTHER TEAM.

This is exactly what the refs should have allowed. The result would have been two teams trying to score goals with the opponents having to defend.

After more research, it turns out their bracketing was the problem.

quote:

When the Riverdale High School and Smyrna High School (Tenn.) girls basketball teams met in the District 7-AAA consolation game Saturday night, facing them were a perverse set of incentives. The winner would be on track to face national power Blackman in the semifinals of the Region 4-AAA playoffs, while the loser wouldn't meet Blackman until the finals (assuming they made it that far).

Crucially, two and only two teams from the region advance to the state sectionals. If they assumed they would lose to Blackman—both teams already had once this season—the only way to advance to the state sectionals was to lose in the consolation game and be placed on the opposite side of the bracket as Blackman. So, both teams intentionally tried to lose.

Why in the frick would the loser of a consolation game get to advance???

Both schools fined $1,500. I didn't know they fined high school sports teams. I thought they just banned them

looks me as thought they were both scared to face team Blackman

As a girls basketball team, do you blame them?

Someone must have told them that once you do, you never go back.
