What's the up side for leaving it on? Because I think we all know what the downside is...

I keep the engine running in case I want to use the lighter to spark up a cigarette.

I can't find one situation where leaving the car on directly caused an explosion. Am I wrong?

If you have an older car/truck, it can make your check engine light come on. Only I can think of.

Assuming it's the push in lighter you're fine. You can throw a lit cig in some gas and all it will do is go out..

I witnessed a pump overflow at the gas station last Sunday. Is it bad that the first thing I thought of was what would happen if I lit a match and tossed it over there?

The key is to strap on your old baseball cleats and moonwalk between the pump and your truck.

Don't get in and out of the car while fueling.

I turn it off, unless I have a bad battery.

Who gets back in their car when pumping gas, other than women?

There's good reasons, although they are extremely rare.

Air conditioning/heater stays on in extreme weather months.

Nothing is going to happen with modern cars. Nothing.

FWIW, I do it when its super hot or super cold outside. When its 0 degrees and ice covering your car, you'd want the heat to remain on too.
