ODP is a time commitment in and of itself. When I was a kid it was separate from club soccer.

How/why are they blending it with your kid?

My son plays for the Houston Dynamo U13 DA and they don’t travel that much at all. All the travel teams come here to play us.

Sounds like you’re shelling out loads of cash.

I hate soccer. Why not have your son play baseball, football, golf, tennis...fricking anything but soccer. And to think that there is Travel Soccer is just hilarious, to me.

That’s a lot of miles on that Volvo. Hope you got the extended warranty, Baw.

My daughter plays competitively but I've never posted about it. It's a great sport...for girls.

Golf?

I’d rather my son play on a team, have coaches that coach, fans that yell, a time clock that tells him he has to do things in a rush, loud and Obnoxious fans, running, sweating, full contact, potential injury ...none of which come with golf.

It’s separate. I didn’t include the state and regional camps for ODP.

Club is $350/kid for tournaments, that’s it besides food and lodging.

Yea, luckily we don’t travel far enough to play TX teams.

I think the best plan for a kid is expose them to as many sports as possible and the older they get you drop the ones that they 1) don't enjoy and 2) just simply aren't good at (which they most likely won't enjoy). By high school, you end up with a handful of sports and activities and you let them choose their path.

Running around city to city, state to state playing fricking travel soccer leaves -0- time to for elite training in real sports that matter.

Soccer is getting so big in Texas now, when I was in high school in the early 90s, I played with the Klein Texans. There was one team in the greater Houston area for every birth year, now it is a huge club with dozens and dozens of teams which has been completely watered down. It’s sad but on the flipside good to see that soccer is blowing up.

I was part of the ODP pool for a few years, then I quickly realized how good at soccer I wasn’t. There were some absolutely phenomenal kids in the pool that went on to play pro soccer. Eric Quill was a good friend of mine and we still chat every now and then. He played up a year, he was a Baller in his early teens and was running circles around kids several years older than him. We all knew he had a future with soccer.

Serious question, but have you actually sat down with your child and asked him if this is something he really wants to do? I mean seriously, look at that schedule. Your kid isn’t playing soccer on the weekends, he’s going to work. Traveling for work is hard enough as an adult, so I really fail to see the benefit of putting a young kid on the road every weekend. Throw in practice and when does you kid actually get to be a kid? Seriously stop and think about your kid. How many weekends a year are you gonna keep him out on the road? What travel league will you sign him for next once travel soccer ends? You do realize just with that schedule alone, 30% of his weekends for the year are already spent on the road correct?

San Antonio has the best youth teams in TX. We are lucky to get a draw when we play over there.

I posted in the OP that this is likely his last season, I doubt he’ll want to do this anymore. He’s excited to get back that out there.

Thats 1/2 a season.

I think club competitive travel soccer is great for the overall social development of the child, when done within reason. Having a healthy mix of home matches, a few travel friendly matches (within an hour from your home field), and a few tournaments are reasonable. I'm allowing my child to do it because it teaches them healthy competition, teamwork, social skills, comradery, etc. When we travel to tournaments, the kids and parents have a blast. The parents drink and cut up, and the kids bunk with each other in hotel rooms, go out to restaurants together, etc.

Way to waste the kid's youth. He'll never get it back.

ODP is a separate program and totally optional. It’s pretty much pointless and only small % of the top players do it.
