Transmission question

SUV has over 130,000 miles on it. When I bought it a couple of years ago, it had not had the transmission fluid changed. It was still red. Dealership said don't change it because at that mileage, sludge and fluid had built up seals and that if changed out, it might start leaking. Fluid is now pretty dark. SO..... should I:
1. Do nothing
2. Change the fluid out where one of those machines is used
3. THe one I am tempted to do. Do it the old fashioned way. Drop the pan, replace the gasket and fluid.

3 would obviously be the clutch move.

Drop the pan, change filter.... Add fluid back to level on dipstick

Number 3. Do NOT get a flush. I dropped my pan and changed the filter at 100k and have had no problems. My fluid was almost clear.

I wouldn't frick with it. Plenty of trannys still shifting gears with 150-200k miles on them with out any maintenance. (maintenance is a hard word to spell)

Thanks. I was thinking the pressure of the machine could cause a problem.

It will.... Best thing for the transmission is a filter change

Drop the pan, drain fluid into a clean container. Replace filter.
Replace gasket.
Full transmission with fluid you took out.
Top off with new fluid.
Do. Not. Replace. Fluid.
eta: strain old fluid through a strainer if you want.

3.... and use the recommended fluid not some "one size fits all" fluid that is "compatible" with a bunch of different fluid types. They tend to have harsher detergents that can cause problems.

I would do nothing. If you must do something , drip the pan and replace filter. That way , at least , you're only changing about 30% of the fluid. Not only will you risk leaking but also slipping if it's never been done. The shot in there bonds to parts and almost becomes part of the tranny. fricking with it now could force you to replace the transmission very soon after.

What he said. Mine survived 250k miles of towing abuse before it died on factory everything.

if you replace the fluid, you'll be replacing the transmission shortly. leave it alone if it's not giving you any trouble. once your transmission has over 75,000-80,000 miles, never change the fluid.

#3 if you are so inclined. Change the filter and the fluid, check for metal shavings in the pan. Changing you fluid is no less hazardous than leaving the old in unless you're willing to strain it out but there is a good chance the discoloration indicates a change in the fluid properties whic means it is not ideal for your transmission any more.
Not sure where you live but if you're in the Lafayette area and would consider taking it to a transmission shop, I would recommend Lafayette Transmission on Dulles. The owner is honest and fair, the only caveat is that he does not work on foreign cars anymore, though he may make exceptions for rear wheel drive SUVs, not sure.
