like cool hand luke said about switching...usually a yard master gives you a "switch list" of a train needing to be put together. you may have 10 tracks 8 have cars and 2 are empty. you have to put a "brake" car at the end of the track for "kicking" (this is fun). you start with one track with cars and look over your list of cars that need to be put on the train you are making..line the switch tell the engineer to "kick" it..engineer puts it in notch 8 gets up to about 10 mph you say that'll do and reach your hand in between the cars to pull the lever to uncouple the cars train stops and the car keeps rolling into the switch you have lined...then you relign back to the track you pulled out and kick the cars you dont need back into it and keep going through that process until you finish that one track, then you go to the next one with cars in it to continue building your train...
engineer "runs" the train not "drives"..you can only go forwards (known as "pull on them") and backwards (know as "shove on 'em") the train just follows the tracks..
