Idk how active he was, but he died in 1978, which puts him over a decade into the last 50 years, so I'm counting him.

Polansky's work is amazing. Repulsion, Rosemary's Baby, Chinatown.. His best movie is The Pianist. The way he filmed that movie is literally what he experienced in the Kraków ghetto. The build up down to the complete destruction of the war. It's real. His personal life has a really bad thing he did, but also he had 2 really bad things done to him. I'm sure he is not all there. Still not an excuse but I'm speaking of his work.
