I always forget that one. Loved literature but grammar was never my strong suit. My grandfather was a commander of a destroyer escort during WWII by the way. SS Swenning. My dream is to have my son and/or daughter attend the US Naval Academy!

I'm fricking with you bro. Don't send your kid to the boat school unless you're absolutely sure he wants to devote 30+ to becoming an Admiral. The Academy is not necessarily what college life should be.

Hunter S Thompson

I'll start off by saying I'm a fan of the doctor. And while he probably wouldn't make my top ten list, his chronicling of the hideous Nixon Era--the darkest six years in America's political history--is a significant contribution to the literature of political thought and analysis.

Elaborate on what? I think it's nuts to name Thompson as a top 6 artist of the last half century.

The guy was the definition of artist. Gonzo journalism is being replicated at an insane frequency today. But the real kicker is, all acclaimed artists alive would easily put him in the top 6.

Jobs and Kubrick are definitely worth discussing.

He's the only one on Snatchey's list that I thought belonged anywhere in the conversation. Interesting that you focused on him.

I'm not sold on that at all. Moreover, journalism, even the brand pioneered by Thompson, is pushing the boundaries of most definitions of art.

In any single category he wouldn't make top 6 (writer, journalist, thinker, etc.). I don't think he gets anywhere close in the aggregate either.

In my opinion people who revere Thompson exalt Thompson. There is no middle ground. Thompson was eccentric and interesting, but I can't justify him in the top 6, probably not the top 15 or so.

Anyone else mention Charles Nelson Reilly?

In all seriousness, Richard Pryor should be mentioned for his revolutionary style of standup

I don't exalt him. I found his works singularly fascinating and altogether unique among his contemporaries. I don't know that he's a top 6 (odd number isn't it) artist of the last 50 years, but he's the only one that didn't leave me with a WTF face when I read OP's list.

Nothing's wrong with him. But when you try to narrow down the six most meaningful/impactful/talented/whatever artists since the 1960s, you have to justify that shite. That's why I said you set yourself up for failure. It's really, really easy to sit here and snipe at your choices. Truth is, I'd have trouble coming up with a top 50 list. But top six? Come on...

There you go. Pryor was one of the few black men of his time--any time for that matter--who could punch a white man in the face ... and make the white man laugh.
