I always liked Arthur Ashe, but that is the most misplaced statue on Monument Avenue.

Grew up just a few minutes from this thing...the guy who created it is a super nice guy, would never be able to tell him what it looks like even though I'm sure he's heard it from many others.

What the hell did Arthur Ashe do other than be black and get AIDS?

Thought statues were racist and illegal now.

The way he allegedly got Aids wasn't his fault and he used the time he had left to start the Arther Ash foundation and spread education about the disease. Pretty courageous if you ask me.

It's fine that you enjoy it. As I said, I always liked Arthur Ashe. I just think that his statute is out of place on Monument Avenue which has statues honoring RE Lee, JEB Stuart; Jefferson Davis; Matthew Murray; and Stonewall Jackson. It's like playing "which of these is not the same?" I'm not saying take any of them down, I just think it could have been better placed.

Looks like he's going to hit the kids with the racket. What are the books supposed to represent?

He was active in teaching programs in Tennis for inner city kids ,but stressed the importance of education over sports .

Author of history books( perhaps the definitive ones) chronicling Black athletes in America: "Hard Road to Glory".

I specifically remember his stories about African American Jockeys who once dominated Horse Racing . ( Most all of the mounts in the 1st race & winners of like 14 or 15 of the first 20 installmehtsnwere Black ,but they were pushed out of the game by Segregation/ envy due to huge purses)

Raised millions for the United Negro College Fund,etc......

This is off the top of my head so someone else may be able to better articulate his iconic status than me.

Thanks, but holding the books and rack differently would probably have looked better.
