It really depends what you want. Do you want to be in a gentrified gay area? Rougher blue collar area? Gangland? How many people of color do you want to live around? All those things will depend on where you live.

From redneck to hoodrat to chinese mafia. Atl has it all

Well, and there's virtually zero public transit, and everything is spread out.

For your age range, I'd check out Midtown, Virginia Highlands, Inman Park, Old Fourth Ward (near Beltline), Buckhead, Vinings (near the ball park) and then I guess the area around Emory is nice too, but I'm not usually out that way.

I don't really do OTP (outside the perimeter), but I'm sure others can give you intel there.

That area got hit really hard with the foreclosure crisis in 2009-2012.

My parents benefited from this. They move to the ATL area in 2012 and bought a house in Cobb County that was foreclosed for $170k. They basically flipped it and was appraised for over $400k a year ago

Decatur. Nah, unless you have purple hair

North Fulton for past 15 years, we like it. I’d consider Cherokee and Forsyth, but beware it is all changing very fast with out of control growth. Choose wisely.

Currently live in Atlanta. If I was you who seems to be looking for a condo, I would live near the Beltline. Hop on there with your dog - plenty of bars, food, etc. Highlands, Midtown, Inman Park, Reynoldstown, Cabbagetown, etc.

Druid Hills is different than Decatur (although close geographically). Also your age, no wife, and desire to live in a condo changes things. Nothing wrong with Druid Hills, but if I were young and single and still going to pay inside the perimeter prices, I'd live somewhere more walkable to some nightlife. You would think Druid Hills would have more given its location near a campus and downtown, but its sort of stuck in no mans land between the bars/restaurants of Decatur and Virginia Highlands. At your age, you will be somewhere around the beltline/Ponce City Market all the time. Get a little closer to that, or if doing Druid Hills, live on the far western side of it.

Not really. Marta is as good as any subway system in the US outside of DC or Chicago. Atlanta's urban core is very condensed with urban sprawl far outside it (like any US city).

Its probably my least favorite big city that I've ever been to, and I've spent a lot of time there. Just too many people for me. Traffic is awful most of the time no matter where you go. People are kind of meh.

There are definitely some cool spots in Atlanta though. Tons of restaurants, breweries, music, events, etc. You can get to the mountains pretty quick going north.

I do. Just not sprawled out so much. And ATL doesn't really have any identity. Its culture is traffic, and sprawl. So much sprawl.

That isn't to say that there aren't very nice places to live in Atlanta. Plenty of good livin' there. My sister lives in Marietta, and they seem to live an enchanted life. Just not my thing.

This is the dumbest fricking thing I have ever heard. The only bad areas in Atlanta are the bad areas where the OP will not be hanging out.

Atlanta has the best suburbs in the entire country

I know I sound defensive, but Atlanta is no different than any other US metro area of comparable size. The famous quote “America has only three cities: New York, San Francisco, and New Orleans. Everywhere else is Cleveland” has some truth to it. Urban sprawl is an American tradition, not unique to Atlanta. Houston, Dallas, Phoenix, etc. And if you don't like urban sprawl, you can live in the urban core of Atlanta and barely need a car if that's your thing. The Midtown/downtown part of Atlanta is as condensed with high rises as anywhere in the US outside of NYC. If you want a little more space but still walkable to everything you need, there are dozens of neighborhoods, even suburbs, that fit.

The dreaded 9-5 one hour interstate commute is for people who choose that life.

Terrible airport. If you have a connecting flight, absent weather or other type delays, you are completely screwed. That's all I got.

You have a point. It's too big. It needs to be split into two, like NYC, DC, Chicago. When I used to travel for business, I always found the smaller airports more convenient and efficient in every way. It is huge and you can go non-stop to just about anywhere in the world, but the airport experience itself isn't pleasant.
