Do you honestly expect us to believe that there are not 2500 "skilled" laborers looking for work in the US?

You can talk to anyone in the industry right now or google information. There is an unreal amount of work going on in the energy and refining industry among others. Ask the companies that are trying to get skilled workers to staff turnarounds all over the country.

And it's no BS, in the next 3 or so years, southeast TX and SW La is going to see over $100 billion in investments made with new construction and refurbishments.
La was told to plan and start trying to get some more comprehensive training plan in place years ago, but really didn't listen.

There are companies struggling to find reliable people for MAINTENANCE around some of these plants.

That's why I find it laughable when people say that there are plenty of people in the area skilled enough to fill these jobs.

there are twice as many jobs as there are people that can fill them

Just got out of a meeting with a business owner from Texas about upcoming work we need done.
Immediatly when we started the meeting, he passed out an article about this very subject. He wanted to make damn sure everyone understood what is happening and that we will be needing to pay top $$$ and per diem.

Here is a link to the Business Week article. I think I'm going to move to Australia to cook offshore.

The camps in SW La? or just the subject in general?

Since the meeting was about the upcoming work, what did they tell you to expect?

be careful with that per diem......you can really get your arse in a bind if you dont claim it correctly and try to hide it to use it as income.

Like these guys.

Major staffing agency Hutco to pay nearly $2 million in overtime back wages to workers following US Labor Department investigation

Hutco mischaracterized certain wages as "per diem" payments and impermissibly excluded these wages when calculating overtime premiums, thus denying employees earned overtime compensation. This improper pay practice also resulted in FLSA record-keeping violations involving the accuracy of employees' wages and actual hours worked.

So high that “you can take every citizen in the region of Lake Charles between the ages of 5 and 85 and teach them all how to weld and you’re not going to have enough welders,” said Peter Huntsman, chief executive officer of chemical maker Huntsman Corp

I work with contracts for a major company.
Just met with the owner of a specialty company that we need and it is just going to be rough for the kind of skilled worker they provide because so much shite is going on everywhere.

He did mention your big Lake Charles project in that they are hearing a rumor that when the construction starts, per diem might be paid across the board to everyone as well as good wages to get the people they need. That kind of stuff starts a chain reaction with other companies having to do the same.
Could be BS, but this kind of stuff has him worried.

like I said, finding the jobs arent the issue, anyone that wants to work can find a job. It's harder for staffing companies and employers to find workers than it is for workers to find jobs.

shite I know some boat companies that are tying up boats bc they are tired of dealing with the prima donna boat capt that are demanding high day rates. The workforce is the problem, not the available jobs

Exactly. Companies are going to have to pay top wages/per diem to attract and KEEP craft. If not, they will be jumping to the next job for a dollar more.

Pretty sure he was indicating that they were possibly going to pay per diem to everyone, even the locals.
Kind of what was happening with the labor force in 06/07 after Katrina and Rita, but on a larger scale that last longer.

Yeah, I fully expect wages in this area to skyrocket because of competition. I'm pretty sure I won't be in the contract side by then.

But I do hear things...and plants are holding off right now as far as pay hikes for contractors. It's more of a "who makes the first move" sort of thing" right now. With all this construction work going on soon, maintenance contract workers are going to be making more than anyone has ever made by then.
