I work for mega oil field service company, run an engineering team, and the same thing happens to me, makes no sense to me. But whatever.

That is how many Louisiana Universities operate.

I learned this at Nicholls. A professor told me that the department had to spend all the money it was allocated in order for it to get the same or more allocation for next year.

That is why some places will buy a year’s worth of toilet paper or new equipment in June to make sure their budget is spent.

My FIL worked for BNSF 20 or so years ago. Worked a lot out of Memphis. When it was getting close to inventory time they would have to get rid of all the stuff in the yard. 1/4 mile sections of track cut up and put into scrap cars. Brand new switches (thousands of dollars each)... scraped.

If that stuff was there they would have their budget cut the next year, then have a big derailment or flood caused washout and would have nothing to fix it with.

I was a government contractor for 8 years. I can tell you first hand how much money they blow on useless shite just to keep their budget in tact.

It's everywhere at all levels. You spend the money or risk them lowering your budget.

LADOT buys brand new CAT equipment every year so they don't lose their $$$

Many companies operate like this. Let’s just say there is a local chemical plant that would purchase several hundred thousands of dollars worth of paint before year end so their maintenance painting budget wouldn’t get cut the next year. All the paint would be stored for them to use over time but in many cases would eventually expire and would have to be disposed of. Crazy

That’s exactly how budgets work in all government and large companies department operations, wether it’s just or not. You want to spend your departments budget to avoid surplus.

Yep. Thank Jimmy Carter, who vegan zero based budgeting. But no Repub presidents have pressured for a bill to end it thru Congress.

All you have to do is look at our current president, who is a career politician and has made hundred of millions of dollars off the backs of hard working Americans!

Wrong. He didn’t make the money off of hard working Americans. He and his family made the money by selling out their country, breaking countless laws, and jeopardizing the future of our country.

Most Americans don’t care.

Didn’t read but I 100% agree. You are a dumbass if you vote for a new tax of any kind. The government does not need any more money

It's sickening to think that this is normal government operating procedure, but apparently when you have career politicians in charge there are clearly no checks and balances in place!

I think most Americans do care, but they know there is little that can be do and just accept it!

Every department of every organization everywhere (virtually) spends to meet their budget if they undercut it. That’s a standard business practice.

Do you know there are different levels of government. Federal, state, local?

Meanwhile our roads suck. Too bad their extra budget money can’t go towards that.

I have sat many, many hours in plants doing nothing at the end of the year to eat thru a budget. Stretched out the end of turnarounds for the same reason.
If you don’t spend it you don’t get as much at some places.
