That’s how it is in every government department.

Use it or lose it.

There's a local story around here of a guy from the military making an order for $10k worth of ant killer right before the fiscal year ended.

I worked for a parish government and this was the case every year. Use it or lose it for next year. I'm not surprised to hear it at all.

You vote for the person and not their policies don’t you?
Every time you vote in a presidential election you vote for this. It’s one of the biggest platforms they run on.

It’s called baseline budgeting and it’s the worst scam ever invented.

This doesn’t just happen in government. It’s budget 101 in the private sector as well.

is the private sector wasting my money by doing this? no.
is the gov't? yes.

Is the the problem with all government budgets from the Federal all the way down to the local level. No matter how much money they get in a given year, it’s going to be spent no matter what so next year they can demand that much plus more. It’s a vicious cycle of perpetually growing budgets.

This is what you get when government grows to the point ours has grown. And unless we guy the “deep state”, it’s only going to keep growing.

Do you buy or consume anything made by a non-government entity? If so, yes, they’re wasting your money as it’s built into the price of the product.

This has been going on for as long as federal agencies have had the purse strings. I know they have a budget, but it’s highly manipulated.

What a choice

Kill grandma because you reduce the growth of the "budget" and have a top rate of 34%

Or

Bankrupt everyone and get gay marriage slippery slopes with a top marginal rate of 38%

What a choice.

Saw this in the military.

The best way to solve it would to make a portion of savings from one year should be reimbursed to the agency as a bonus to the employees. Then they will actually start cutting costs.
Military enrollment and fiscal efficiency would increase 300% in a year

I'm not sure there is a single entity, government or private, that deals with annual budgets, that doesn't work this way

Another friend, who is an engineer with the Corp of Engineers, chimed in and told us about the new fleet of Yukons they just received. He said the average price of each was about $80,000! I have no problem with the Corp of Engineers driving a nice vehicle, but I guess a $35,000 Camry is beneath them.

There are tax reasons for buying the fleet of yukons and not the Camry. Section 179 of the tax code allows for a tax deduction for company vehicles bought and put into use that business year. This tax deduction is based on weight of the vehicle

Light vehicles (those under 6,000 pounds) are allowed a deduction of $12,200 PLUS bonus depreciation can be deducted in the amount of $8,000, totaling $20,200 for 2023
Heavy vehicles (between 6,000 and 14,000 pounds) are allowed a $28,900 limit. HOWEVER, heavy vehicles also qualifies for 100% bonus depreciation through the end of 2022, thanks to the TCJA. BUT beginning 2023, that rate drops 20% each year. So, for 2023, bonus depreciation of 80% can be taken.

There are also incentives for buying "clean vehicles" and EVs

I worked at LSU (Wetland Resources) back in the 70's. My boss told me the same thing; if we didn't spend all of the money allotted to us, our budget would be cut the next year. She said everyone operated that way.

I know you pay local sales tax on federal projects - but (and I’m likely wrong here) depreciation on federal assets wouldn’t make sense would it? I don’t think federal agencies are paying corporate taxes.

But they all say the same thing you heard. We have zero budgeting controls at any locale. Common sense is not used at all, we have allowed our systems to become too complicated and frivolous.

It must be fixed and no one is talking about it.

That's the problem. Nobody becomes a politician to help people. They are in it to help themselves. Don't expect change ever.

I worked for a federal law enforcement agency and can confirm this happened. We received X amount of funds to upgrade uniforms and everyone got what they need and came significantly under our X funds. I went back through the paperwork months later before we were getting audited and saw the remained money was spent on stuff like "hiking boots, rain jackets, thermal gear, camo, and etc." I never saw any of that. Come to find out... it was given to the professional staff and their family members. The money HAD to be spent to ensure they got the same amount or more for next year.

I was appalled.

Isn’t this the business model everywhere. You have to spend all your budget or you will not get as much next year

This is BS because GSA handles vehicle purchases and agencies “rent” them.

He never said the Corps of Engineers bought them.
