State, local and federal authorities have mobilized across Hamilton County — home to Cincinnati — to investigate the source or sources, Newtown Police Chief Tom Synan told the Enquirer.

Synan also heads the law enforcement task force for the Hamilton County Heroin Coalition, which was created so that public health and law enforcement officials from Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky could collaboratively combat the heroin epidemic plaguing the tri-state area.

Additional heroin overdoses reported in that area, plus New Jersey, tipped the total to more than 225, according to reporting on Fox 13 News Now.

In the same time period of the Cincinnati overdoses, 13 were reported last Tuesday in Jennings County, Ind., last Tuesday, 12 were reported on Wednesday in Montgomery County, Ky., and 29 overdoses linked to free samples of heroin, marked with a Batman symbol, were reported between Tuesday and Thursday in Camden, N.J.

It's a cruel and sad world out there. Some people can't deal with everyday reality and just want out.

We have to keep this scourge illegal. It's not like companies would require driver's licenses to prove age, collect tax, have a standardized dose, and basically eliminate hot shots all together!

Heck, the war on drugs has only cost us billions of dollars and look at what's been accomplished. High profile busts shown all over television for the masses to see. It's not like the product is cheaper and more available than ever.

The problem is the heroin is laced with carfentanil.

Is this the new elephant tranquilizer heroin?

I read, here I believe, that heroin was being laced with this elephant tranquilizer. It's name suggested it was similar to fentanyl, just 100 fold more potent.

Direct result to a reaction by the DEA over prescription drugs. Vicodin becoming triplicate primarily. You made fricking heroin more affordable than Vicodin.

Yeah - human beings never react to changes in the environment. They just quietly pay whatever increased fees/rates/taxes/copayments without complaint, fuss or exploration of other options.

carfentanil

It's 10,000x more potent than morphine. It's likely many of these people had no clue what they were getting which is the danger of the black market

It's been used as a large animal (elephant) anesthesia

I'm confused as to what is legal. I read the article twice and didn't see anything. The laced heroin?

And Narcan doesn't work on these drugs that is being mixed with the heroin. So you can't really help people who are overdosing with it.

Some of the billions spent on the war on drugs needs to be taken and put into recovery. But, of course, then law enforcement departments would lose all those meaningless grants.

that particular drug isn't approved for human use.

as Roger said, it's used as a tranquilizer for large animals (ie. elephants).
