Downtown itself has more to offer than it did 15 years ago. After visiting the USS kid you can go the state capital, I think you can take a tour in the old state capitol, and across the street from the old state capital there are several places to eat, etc.
There is always LSU's campus, but the appeal for kids is going see Mike the Tiger, which we obviously do not have at the moment. Is LSU baseball or softball playing home when you will be in BR? If it is the type of day you don't want to waste being inside, it would be worth going to a baseball or softball game.
I know one of my friend's kids loves going to Area 51. Here is the website. LINK
Someone else might know more about this, but I think the building used for the 13th Gate has one of those places where you go through a maze using clues, etc...
The Swamp Tour. There is the Zoo, but if going to New Orleans is an option, go to the Audubon Zoo.
BR isn't lacking in movie theaters so there is that. There are bowling alleys, etc

...That swamp/lake being empty at the start of the floods saved a lot of homes!!!
U Club, Springlake, Nicholson Lakes and everything along Bayou Manchac and Bayou Fountain would have been toast.
