Will be there next month, wasting 2 days. Are there any places to go or things to see? Any recommended places to get a bite to eat?

You'll get a lot of jokes but Birmingham has basically gone from shitty to one of the best foodie towns in the USA.

It's good, but let's not get carried away.

Some business associates and I ate at 5 Points Public House and Oyster Bar one night last week after work. I was pleasantly surprised. I thought 5 Pts was going to shite, but they are hanging in there.

ETA: OP, you should check out Highlands Bar and Grill.

Went there for a wedding last weekend and I lived in Avondale two years ago while finishing an internship in town.

I'd check out Avondale. In the area: Cahaba Brewery, Fancy's on 5th, Saw's, Avondale Brewing (crawfish food truck out back), Post Office Pies (pizza place).

Downtown: Good People Brewing, Region's Park, Bamboo on 2nd, El Barrio (1+ hour wait on Friday/Saturday)

Coffee: Revelator, Red Cat, Urban Standard (in that order)

Southside: J Clyde, Mellow Mushroom (going to get judged here - but it's the only MM I've ever enjoyed eating at. It's unique). Makario's for cheap Mediterranean eats. Rojo's (more in the Highlands area)

Don't let anyone refer you to Uptown. It's a little development north of the interstate that, from the little I've seen, is just chain restaurants.

If it's a weekend, check out the farmer's market at pepper place.

Definitely check out Regions Park for a Barons game if they are in town when you are.

So, funny story. I was living in B'ham at the time they stopped filming there and the reason why was that bigger/nicer cities were poaching their detectives featured in the show

The detectives for Birmingham were the dumbest detectives of any city I've seen on first 48.

Would definitely see if there's a band playing at Iron City LINK. Really cool venue. Saw the Dirty Guv's there on their farewell tour last year.

Hottest, as in growing fastest; which is great. It is always on the up-and-coming lists because the food scene used to consist of Chili's, Applebee's and Jim & Nick's. It was hard to eat out here until 5 or so years ago. I am happy that there are more options popping up now. Things are definitely trending in the right direction.
