nobody is debating that.
however each person has physical limits that god gave them. once you've trained and done everything you can to improve your speed all that is left to do is get the best bike you can afford.
why would you leave watts and seconds on the road?
a lesser bike not only robs you of speed but it robs you of watts.

I will say that I upgraded earlier this year and my average mph did increase 2mph automatically. Carbon and high end components make a difference.

not true. cptbengal read an article that said all 2k bikes are equal to all 10k bikes.

Yeah, it just becomes a "$$$ vs training" question by that time. I've already spent quite a bit of money after training a ton (didn't want to get passed on a TT bike so thought 21mph on a road bike should be safe enough) so I'm hoping this second set of training gets me where I want to be. I haven't plateaued yet...!

if you're in the valley do the gainey rides and BOS. that's the best thing that's happened to my training - riding with racers who are way faster than me.

I was having this conversation with coworkers literally minutes ago. Some people don't understand.
One of my bikes is 1/3 of the way to hitting 5 digits and I have zero regrets. Best riding and feeling bike I've ever owned. I'd add a $2500 carbon wheelset if I had the money. Perhaps replace my $400 frame with a $3000 dollar carbon frame.
These people could be buying high-end boats, or guns, jeeps, or whatever. They simply prefer bikes and want the best equipment and technology available for what they enjoy doing.

same for all sports.
strain gauge wattage meters built with titanium machined parts to accurately measure your power on a bike is not something you can build for $100 for instance.
thats one tiny part of what goes into building up a performance bike.

i lost 5th place in the TN 40k state time trial by 1/4 of a second to my best friend after a one hour ride.
So how much would you have paid for 5th place?
Or you could have trained just a bit more or more efficiently and improved your time or been a bit stricter on your diet and worked for that 5th place trophy.
I think that is what CptBengal is speaking about.

I actually did the Gainey ride and BOS ride once each. The problem is I only have my TT bike and a SS/Fixie after I sold my road bike. Biggest regret of my biking life. I might go though... Couple of friends do it once in a while. Also, I never ride aero in a group if you were going to ask haha.

sure could have. for instance i fasted for 4 days prior to the TT to lose an additional 5 lbs before it. i had done everything training-wise i could do at that point and my bike was what it was..so thats all i had left.
it could have affected me negatively..my coach yelled at me when i told him what i did..but every ounce counts when you're trying to be fast.

Honest question, if you're truly maxed out physically with good equipment and still in 6th place, what's the point of getting the very best equipment to maybe sneak a 4th or 5th place finish?
At what point do you stop blaming the equipment, recognize your physical limitations, and be happy with taking your physical performance to its extremity?

My uncle has a few bikes like that. They're all carbon fiber and can be lifted with a pinky.

Late to this game, sorry...
The LAMBRA (LA-MS) 40K record was recently broken. The previous record held up for 22 years and was ridden on an everyday road bike with clip-on bars, bladed spokes on the front, plastic wheel covers on the back, and a really snazzy skinsuit.
Adding $8K isn't going to make you a champion until you get to the national level and beat somebody by a half-second.

The wheels on my Wilier road bike were $3000 (ZIPP 404)...

If you're winning races on those, congrats. But I suspect in that case you'd be winning races without them. If you aren't winning races... congrats, you have a fine set of wheels!
