Wouldn't it be a tad easier for the weekend warrior, middle-aged rider to lose 5-10 lbs.?

Well, losing 5-10 lbs on a reasonable racing bike isn't possible. That's WalMart Huffy vs. bike shop carbon fiber. Your weight range fouls up your question. But in general Hell Yes, getting in better shape beats the difference between a $2K and $10K bike, in my opinion.

Umm... no it doesn't. You cannot ride a WalMart piece-of-junk the same way you can a reasonably-priced road bike and get the same results. For one thing, if you put the requisite miles into your WalMart bike you'd break it in half. The question isn't WalMart vs. $10K carbon fiber everything, it's a $2-3K good starter racing bike vs. $10K carbon fiber everything.

Outside racing, yeah I can see your point. The doctor/lawyer crowd is famous for spending way too much for good reason. Twenty years ago they went for famous Italian brands. Now they go for carbon-everything and will never realize the advantage the weight-loss gives them.

Yeah, and I don't race bikes. Have no intention to do so. I ride for cardio every now and then when I don't feel like running.

My old roommate had a nice Specialized brand road bike. Rode it once. Kind of neat and the gears/brakes were smooth as hell, but he paid like 8 grand for it and now it's just hanging up in his garage.
