And your sweeping generalization tells me everything I need to know about you.

I've only spent a few hours in Houston and it is more like LA in appearance than most sunbelt cities.

I'm not a fan of the government of California, or any of the representatives that they send to Washington. However, it's important to note that about 40% of the state typically votes Republican in national elections. There are plenty of people in Cali that agree with you politically.

Not sure if you understand how congressional voting works. She doesn't hold a statewide office.

I was born in So. CA and spent most of my years through high school in San Francisco. There are a million things to love about CA (mountains, ocean, redwoods, wine country, diverse cultures, great universities, etc., etc.). However, there are too damn many people, so I will likely never return to live there. I visit often, but I need to get out of the cities after a week.

Houston has a ton more open space than Los Angeles also....

Well looks like this thread is accomplishing exactly what I wanted it to. Well done OT.

Dude is like 20. Not that it's an excuse for ignorance, but many college students have yet to learn the life lesson that you can't categorize everything into neat little boxes with labels.

Comparing Houston to LA
Posted on 2/4/14 at 11:21 pm to DallasTiger11
LA is my favorite city. It's infinitely better than Houston, and I don't know how anyone can really compare the two.
I'm guessing the vast majority of people on the OT who bash LA (and California) haven't spent significant time there.

I've read enough about Stockton to know its not that great....

it's worse than whatever you've read!! for some reason it reminds me of alexandria. i got my first taste of it in 03' when i visited some in-laws. my 1996 honda accord got stolen right from the driveway of the in-law's place. i was sleep in the bedroom closest to the driveway and didn't hear a thing. the car had a nice alarm and a kill switch but none mattered. had to catch the bus and train back to san diego. i got back to work and a co-worker told me to look up the national auto theft rates and good ole stockton was at #2. pure shitstain on a map!

I've lived for many years in Louisiana, Texas and California. That kind of makes me as qualified as anyone on this site to comment on this subject.
Good things about CA:
- Diversity of nature (mountains, beaches, national parks, lakes are all less than 3 hours away).
- Best place to work on the planet if you are in the tech or software industry. The number of smart people you come across in the Bay Area is unbelievable. There are a shite ton of 20 somethings doing some amazing things.
- Job opportunities
- Best place to start a company is the SF Bay Area (yes! - no other city in the world comes close)
- Weather
- Great cities/places you can visit - San Diego, Lake Tahoe, Muir Woods, PCH, LA, Disney World, San Francisco.
Not so good things about CA:
- High taxes
- Expensive real estate (I think you end up paying for all the natural beauty around you)
Overall when I look back and consider everything:
California>Texas>Louisiana

Yep, it's one of the main reasons I prefer Sonoma County over Napa.
