The New Basin Canal Memorial Monument

quote:
In 1830, American businessmen in New Orleans decided to build a shipping channel from Lake Pontchartrain to the American sector of the city to compete with the established Carondelet Canal in the French section. Construction of the New Basin Canal began in 1832 with a work force consisting almost entirely of Irish immigrants. (Newly arrived and desperate for jobs, these were the men who would work for the least amount of pay.)
quote:
The work was back-breaking, the hours long and, because of the canal's path through the swamp, yellow fever, cholera, malaria and other diseases were rampant among the laborers. The pay was one dollar a day. By the time the canal was finished six years later, betwen 8,000 - 20,000 Irish immigrants had died in the effort. (The exact figure will never be known because no records were kept, but some have estimated the toll may have been as high as 30,000.)
quote:
The men worked when they were sick, fearing the loss of the job if they missed a day. For this reason, many of the deaths occurred at the work site. They fell where they worked and, usually, the bodies were left there - just pushed to the side and buried in the canal's levee or in the roadway fill next to it. No family member to whisper goodbyes, no priests to offer prayers and no marker to indicate that a life had ever been lived.
The truth it's hard for ALL people that are poor. Exploitation by the rich of the desperate doesn't discriminate by race, we are all equally worthless in their eyes. Get over yourself black america.

Just used this exact project as my example in a conversation the other day about how slavery was horrid, but since they had value they were protected from the worst of the jobs.
No one gave a damn about the Irish famine immigrants.

Remove the monument.
Give us every meal free at Popeyes because they called us kracker or thought about calling us kracker. We still demand the crappy service.
Give us our own special public schools so underachievers will not hang around with kracker overachievers.
Give us our own kracker power flag.

Correct
All through history the desperate have been exploited for economic gain.
In Africa it was tribal War that compromised a population and the rich seized upon it as a means of cheap labor. In Ireland it was a potato famine that compromised its population but unlike Africa those people left willingly to get exploited but the results were similar. Today we have a Central America that is dysfunctional and creating and compromised people who are now being exploited for you guessed it.......cheap labor.

Another history lesson that teaches us a main reason to halt illegal immigration. Human exploitation for economic gain. Not going political on the OT, so
That is all. Good morning!

This is true. No one was treated worse than irish immigrants, one could argue. I have irish blood in me (only <1% at this point) but I still feel connected.
So I understand the african-american argument. However I sure as frick arent demanding compensation or any other bullshite

100 years later my grandfather made the same cutting canals through the Shane and Atchafalaya. Raised 12 kids on it too. They also hunt year around, gardened, fished, netted, trapped, etc (the kids mostly bc there were no schools out in the basin)
