On a side note, that levee in the background is a nuclear bomb shelter.

They fell where they worked and, usually, the bodies were left there - just pushed to the side and buried in the canal's levee or in the roadway fill next to it. No family member to whisper goodbyes, no priests to offer prayers and no marker to indicate that a life had ever been lived.
And some people think we have it bad now days.

It's a monument to the workers. It would be like a monument to slaves at Audubon Park.

Irish weren't considered white back then so it's PC, or would be if SJW types were historically literate.

My Irish ancestry comes from The Bowers Family. Before they came to America the name was spelled Bauer, which is Jewish. My Great Grandfather was Despeaux(100% French). He would always tell my Great Grand Mother(Bowers) that "Irishmen are just nigers turned inside out" So getting back to your comment, its true they weren't considered white and were referred to as the derogatory term we know today.

Irish were known for short tempers and liked to fight. God invented whiskey so the Irish wouldn't concur the world.

lol.

Give those immigrants a choice:

Them being enslaved ,along with their entire families for life . Being someone else's property subject to physical & sexual exploitation for life.

Or them being paid average pay for skilled labourers with the opportunity to find other employment elsewhere, freedom to save & go home,etc.......

I'm 100% certain that every immigrant would choose the latter.

Classic NeoConfederate downplaying of slavery.

The truth it's hard for ALL people that are poor. Exploitation by the rich of the desperate doesn't discriminate by race, we are all equally worthless in their eyes. Get over yourself black america.

Here's a little truth nugget for you.

Irish were used instead of slaves because SLAVES WERE TOO VALUABLE TO LOSE.

Let that one sink in next time a certain demographic whines and bitches about their treatment.

quote:

The builders of the city's New Basin Canal expressed a preference for Irish over slave labor for the reason that a dead Irishman could be replaced in minutes at no cost, while a dead slave resulted in the loss of more than one thousand dollars.

They were regarded lower than slaves.

Also many blacks owned slaves in New Orleans.

LINK

Im not saying it was right, all Im saying is the history of slavery isnt exclusive to whites owning blacks. There are always going to be people that are vulnerable and there are always people looking to exploit that. The rich and powerful do not discriminate by race, creed or color when it comes to money. Not all chains are visible.
